TV presenter unveils Brechin City Hall new look

Brechin City Hall has recently undergone some restoration work and the new look was unveiled to the public last weekend.

The much-loved venue had been closed due to the Covid pandemic but is now in full swing and enjoying the recent facelift.

Speaking to Angus County Press, Trustee Laura Guthrie said:

“Although the pandemic obviously impacted our bookings, we were able to, when safe and permitted to do so, carry out a number of improvements to the hall including a completely new ladies’ toilet and a kitchen refit. We also carried out a lot of work to our stage and backstage area to bring them up to scratch. "

BCHug volunteers presented Andrea with flowers.

“Some of our user groups which include the Brechin Judo Club, Tai Chi, Floral Art, Brechin Amateur Operatic Society (BAOS) and OPUS theatre club have recently been able to return to the hall. We decided to hold an open day to allow members of the public who might not have been inside the hall since early 2020, to come in and see the improvements made.”

She added:

“We invited Andrea Brymer from STV to be our guest of honour to officially open the curtains on our improvements.

Andrea grew up in Brechin and much of her family still live here. We ran tours of the building and invited the various user groups to come along and have a stall to promote their clubs. Those attending included the aforementioned plus the U3A, Hillcrest Housing Association, Tayside Opera plus Combined Productions who produce the annual pantomime which is held in the hall.”

The venue is run by a group of volunteers (Brechin City Hall User Group – affectionately known as BCHug) who give their time and expertise to the upkeep and running of the hall.

BCHug took over the running of the hall in 2016 when it was threatened with closure with the opening of the Brechin Community Campus. The venue was awarded charitable status in 2018 and operate as a group of trustees plus a management committee.

The hall was built on the site of the Old Swan Inn and opened in 1883 and has become an important part of the town community activities.
