Sadie celebrates 100th birthday with family

A family party in Forfar marked a major milestone for local lady Sarah Silver, who celebrated her 100th birthday just after the new year.

More commonly known as Sadie, she grew up in Forfar and, as a member of the Women’s Land Army, working on farms around Angus during the war years.

It was while serving in the land army that she met her future husband, William Silver and the couple went on to have two children, with six great grandchildren – Mathew, Louise, Ewan, Owen, Jack and Laura and three great great grandchildren – Matty, Abbey, and Owen, following.

After the war, Sadie went on to work at the Fyffe Jamieson Maternity Hospital and Whitehills Hospital, but worked latterly at Lockwood’s canning factory.

Sadie was delighted to receive a card from King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort. Special guests also included Pat Sawers, Lord-Lieutenant of Angus, Angus Provost Brian Boyd, local councillors Lynne Devine and Ross Grieg and Rev Karen Fenwick of Lowson Memorial Parish Church.

As a special surprise, Sadie’s family arranged for piper Gwen McAndrew from Laurencekirk to play some tunes, accompanied on drums by children Tommi, Bobbi and Tamasyn.
