This may come as a surprise but I have never before eaten out in Brechin. Living in Kirrie, I have never really thought about coming up here for a meal.
However when I began working in the town more than one person said to me that I would need to go to Rosie’s Bakehouse. Life as your roving reporter is too busy to allow such indulgences during a working week but when the opportunity came to do this review I jumped at the chance and my husband and I came up on Saturday lunchtime.
When we arrived we were ready for lunch. Almost as soon as we went in someone came over to greet us. We got comfy and had a look over the menu which was already on the table and while we were doing so someone came over and told us what was on the specials blackboard that day. The hot dish of the day - a spicy lamb casserole - sounded very tempting but we both decided on soup and a sandwich. When we ordered it was explained to us that we could do a soup and sandwich combination which would work out better value for us. I went for the potato and garlic soup and a brie, roasted tomato, rocket and basil panini and my husband selected the sweet potato and red pepper soup and a chicken and bacon club sandwich. When you order the combination you get a large, steaming mug of soup on the side.
My soup was lovely and hot, just the way I like it and was thick, creamy and nicely garlicky without being overpowering.
My panini was hot and very fresh, oozing with creamy brie with juicy roast tomatoes, aromatic basil leaves and green rocket added colour and more texture. Served on the side were two small bowls, one with crunchy coleslaw and the other plain crisps to add yet more crunch.
My husband’s soup was spicy, full of flavour and warming. He loved it - it was perfectly spiced for him. His club sandwich was given a big thumbs up, Generously filled with loads of bacon, chicken, salad and mayonnaise and he too had the side dishes.
Sadly we were too full to try any of the many and very tempting looking cakes on display. My husband enjoyed a good, strong espresso and I will definitely be back for a coffee and one of those delicious looking goodies.
