Fresh brew at Old Bean Coffee House

Sup it the Old Bean way at a new New York style coffee house opened to the public on Monday in the Millgate.

Offshore worker and former Arbroath High pupil Gary Boyd has brought a slice of the Big Apple to Arbroath with the aroma of a good brew at the heart of his endeavour.

Excited by the buzz around the new venture Gary told the Herald how he was inspired by his uncle and coffee lover Frank Donaldson:

“You used to walk into his house and he would call ‘hello old bean’ and the coffee would be on and he’d offer you a cup. He loved a good cup of coffee.

“Of course at a younger age I didn’t appreciate it but now he is the inspiration behind Old Bean Coffee House and in fact, it is an illustration of Uncle Frank that provides the logo, drawn by his friend, the artist and former Arbroath High teacher, Rikki Craig.”

A true family affair it is Gary’s mum who will manage Old Bean while he is offshore.

“We have had such a great response already.

“It has been absolutely mobbed. We are also selling bagels and they have been very popular, they’ve been flying off the shelf!” Gary added.

Old Bean Coffee House is currently open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a late opening on Thursday until 7.30 p.m. during the festive period.

“We are going to look and see how it goes and hope people understand that we may have to re-jig timings but for now, we look forward to seeing you there!”
