Food and service is top class at Scots Corner

After hearing such good things about Scots Corner in Luthermuir, and knowing snooker legend Jimmy White had visited, I had to try the food for myself.

I went out last Thursday with my partner Ryan for a nice mid-week treat, and a treat is definitely what we got.

We were greeted so warmly by proprietor Murray May that even though it was our first visit, we instantly felt at home.

We were able to pick our own table, our drink order was taken and we were given the menu and specials board to peruse by our attentive waiter.

Thursday is curry night, where you can have a curry and drink for £10, and I was very tempted by the chicken massala.

The problem was I was also tempted by the Cajun chicken on the set menu and the Hunter’s BBQ Chicken and lasagne on the specials menu.

I eventually opted for the Hunter’s Chicken, while Ryan had the homemade steak pie with chips, and a selection of vegetables - including a rice-stuffed tomato and corn on the cob.

The steak pie had a shortcrust pastry base, with a puff pastry topping, which were both cooked well. For Ryan the highlight was the tender beef that melted in the mouth and the delicious gravy.

My chicken was superbly cooked, moist and just the right amount of cheese and BBQ sauce on top so that it was covered, but not oozing everywhere.

The chips, which we both had with our meals, were golden and crisp on the outside, and just right on the inside.

Although full from our meals, we decided to have a look at the dessert menu.

Again, there was a varied selection on offer, but as soon as I heard the homemade cheesecake option - white chocolate and fudge - my mind was made up.

Ryan chose chocolate fudge cake, and opted to have it cold with ice cream.

I was a bit hesitant that I wouldn’t manage my whole dessert when I saw the portion size, but it was so delicious that there was no way I was leaving any behind. It has to be the best cheesecake I’ve had (and I’ve had many). The balance of the flavours was spot on, without being sickly sweet.

Ryan’s cake didn’t survive long enough to be pictured, so it is safe to say it was enjoyed!

From the service to the food, it has to be one of the best meals we’ve had out.
