United escape relegation

RAIN followed by a drying out period saw the game at Myreside on Saturday start four hours late and reduced to 23 overs a side.

Watsonians elected to bat but lost Andy Hislop in the third over when he was bowled by Ben McGill. Peter Legget (25 from 25 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) scored quickly but the introduction of Craig Ramsay saw him caught by Jack Plomer with the total on 47 in the 8th over.

The spin attack slowed the run rate and Greig Peal (2 for 13) claimed the wickets of Andrew Fraser-Harris (20 from 33 balls) and Ewan Chalmers to leave the home side on 70 for 4 in the 15th over. Calvin Burnett (2 for 20) and Harsha Vithana (2 for 9) both claimed two wickets, including Stuart Chalmers (20 from 34 balls) as Watsonians closed on 103 for 8 from their 23 overs.

The rain which had started through the latter stages of their innings became heavier leaving the umpires with no alternative but abandon the match with no points being awarded.

Arbroath United v

Arrowdawn Gordonians

Kevin Thomson (2 for 20) claimed two early wickets to leave Gordonians on 33 for 2 after 11 overs at Lochlands on Saturday.

Craig Cameron quickly followed up with the wicket of Devlin however Coel Mahoney and Mayank Bhandari took the total to 73 before Mahoney was caught by Gavin Swan from the bowling of Craig Cameron (2 for 20) in the 24th over. Ryan Cameron (2 for 21) claimed two wickets but Bhandari (70, 10 fours) continued to score freely before being caught by Mark Edwards from the bowling of Gordon Reisima in the 43rd over. Reisima (2 for 31) also had Rowell caught by Bryce Carnegie as Gordonians closed on 149 for 9.

With stoppage for rain the United innings did not start until 6 p.m. and they reached 30 in the eighth over before Craig Cameron was caught by Mahoney from the bowling of Craig Pettitt (3 for 18) who claimed a further two wickets and with Darri Peerless dismissing Gavin Swan (19) United reached 67 for 4 after 20 overs.

Bryce Carnegie hit 36 before giving a return catch to Bhandari but with the light deteriorating the umpires abandoned the match with United on 99 for 5 after 27 overs.

No result was achieved however this combined with results elsewhere meant that United ended the season runners-up in the Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Premier Division.

Arbroath United v Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Select

As part of the celebrations of 125 years at Lochlands, United, who were one of the founder members of the Strathmore Union in 1929, entertained a league select team on Sunday.

The select found runs difficult to come against the bowling of Euan Small and Matthew Hurst and after 11 overs overs had reached 17 for 2 with each bowler claiming one wicket. Ryan Plomer (2 for 14) followed up with the wickets of Gary Hewitson and Richard rennie as the visitors reached 36 for 4 after 18 overs.

While Mark Fleming took three wickets, resistance came from Callum Leese (28 from 47 balls, 4 fours) before he was eighth out with the total on 93 when Harsha Vithana caught him from the bowling of Craig Ramsay. Fleming (4 for 27) dismissed Iain Stewart and Hurst (2 for 11) ended the innings when he bowled Samir Hill with the select dismissed for 108 in the 39th over.

United lost Vithana and Ryan Plomer to Samir Hill (2 for 29) as they reached 29 in the seventh over. Jack Plomer (40 from 62 balls, 6 fours) and Darren Spink (28 from 49 balls) steadied the situation and took the total to 88 in the 21st over when Plomer was caught by Chris Milne from the bowling of Stewart. On the verge of victory Spink was bowled by Milne but Mark Edwards and Gordon Reisima took United to a six-wicket victory in the 28th over.

The match was sponsored by Lindsay Wood and friends.

St Andrews University Staff v

Arbroath United XI

United reached 29 before losing both David Bridges and Harris Carnegie (18) in successive overs to Angus Stewart and Kandi respectively at the University Grounds on Sunday.

Jack Waller and Murray Robb took the total to 61 in the 19th over when Robb was run out and shortly afterwards Waller was bowled by Phil Pass. Bryce Carnegie hit a quick 22 before being dismissed by Stan Franklin (2 for 23) who also accounted for Ross Arbuthnott to leave United on 98 for 6 in the 32nd over.

Blair Carnegie (41, 5 fours) then received good support from Ryan Cameron and they reached 139 in the 44th over before Carnegie was bowled by Kandi (2 for 18), United closing on 146 for 7.

When St Andrews batted Craig Ross (2 for 19) had early success dismissing both Dom Bransden and Phil Pass. Frankland (46) and Wilson gradually increased the run rate with Wilson being dismissed by Ross Arbuthnott. Trideep Roy was run out while Frankland was dismissed by Bryce Carnegie.

The closing stages saw the game evenly poised and although Jon Burnett dismissed Hildred and Lawrence was run out, Tom Clemens (unbeaten 24) ensured that St. Andrews won by three wickets with four balls remaining.

Fixtures

Arbroath United v Heriots

United play their final league match in the CSL Eastern Premier Division at Lochlands tomorrow (Saturday) with the knowledge that they have escaped relegation.

With Heriots losing last week to Grange, United now have the opportunity of finishing fifth if they can defeat Heriots. Heriots for their part have the Scottish cup final on Sunday to look forward to when they play Watsonians at Titwood, Glasgow. The fixture commences at 12 noon and is sponsored by J M Henderson.

Players who should meet at 10.30 a.m. for a 12 noon start are: F.W.G. Burnett (C), M.J. Petrie, C.G. Burnett, M.J. Clark, M.R. Hurst, B.J. McGill, R.E. McLean, G.E. Peal, C. Ramsay, D. Spink, H.E. Vithana. 12th man: G.J. Reisima. Scorer: I.H. Chisholm.

Grange v Arbroath United

Both sides recorded one victory each in the respective league matches and now meet in the final of the Cricket Scotland Trophy at Boghall, Linlthgow, on Sunday. United reached the final by defeating West of Scotland, while Grange defeated Aberdeenshire in a bowl out by 6–1. There is a reserve date of September 9 for this game if the weather intervenes this week.

Players who should meet at 8.15 a.m. for the coach which leaves at 8.30 a.m. are: F.W.G. Burnett (C), M.J. Petrie, C.G. Burnett, M.J. Clark, M.R. Hurst, B.J. McGill, R.E. McLean, G.E. Peal, C. Ramsay, D. Spink, H.E. Vithana. 12th man: G.J. Reisima. Scorer: I.H. Chisholm.

Strathmore XI v Arbroath United XI

United play their final fixture in the Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Second Division when they travel to Strathmore, Forfar, on Sunday.

United lost narrowly last week leaving St Andrews to gain four points in their final match to win the league. Strathmore are challenging strongly for the runners-up spot and it is more realistic that the winners of the Forfar fixture will gain the runners-up place.

Players who should meet at 11.45 a.m. for a 1 p.m. start are: B.C. Carnegie (C), M.S. Robb, R. Arbuthnott, D.C. Bridges (*), J.A. Burnett, R.D. Cameron, H.G. Carnegie, M.C.K. Robb, C.N. Ross, A. Waller, J.S. Waller. Scorer TBC.

As we go to press, the club is hopeful of rearranging this game for tomorrow (Saturday) or September 9 to allow more people to support the 1st XI in the final on Sunday.
