BOXING

Arbroath Amateur Boxing Club

Arbroath ABC’s Haydn Hill progressed to the semi-final of the Boxing Scotland Ltd., Novice Championships, held in the impressive Ravenscraig Sports’ Complex , Wishaw, on Saturday.

Competing in the 1999, 54kg category Hill faced Lewis McNeils, (Forsyth’s ABC) in a quarter-final bout.

McNeils took the fight to Hill from the start. Hill stayed calm under pressure, slipped the attacks and countered with sharp straight lefts. McNeils was all action as he powered forward but Hill stayed cool throughout the action finding the target on his inrushing opponent with accurate straight shots from both hands.

Round two saw the more methodical and technical tactics of Hill wear down McNeils. Hill began to dictate the course of the bout as his opponent tired dramatically. A good left jab and some stiff right crosses to head and body wore down McNeils’ resolve as Hill piled on the pressure and the punches.

The final round continued in similar vein. Hill landing quality shots on the deflated McNeils. However Hill was caught with a stiff right cross to the head when a momentary lack of concentration left a gap which McNeils exploited to good effect. Spurred on by this success McNeils raised his game and instituted a spirited comeback. Hill comfortably rode out the storm, blocking the incoming shots on arms and gloves, waiting for an opening before restoring control with sharp counters that brought a swift end to McNeils desperate attacks.

After three rounds of a quality performance Haydn Hill was awarded a clear and deserved unanimous points win.

Haydn and team-mate Joe Dickson, (who is competing in the 1999 66kg category and got a bye to the next round), will now go forward to the semi-final stages tomorrow (Saturday) at the same venue where both these lads have a very good chance of making the finals and indeed winning the title.
