There was a poor return from the local clubs in the Premier Division at the weekend with all three losing out, but Monifieth Tayside won their Division One local derby with two goals from Gregor Smith and one apiece from Michael Hill and Greig Petrie and goals from Ian McDonald, Brian McKenzie and Graham Whyte ensured that it was a good weekend for the club as the Alliance team also recorded a victory.

BOWLS

Arbroath & District Indoor Bowling Club

Last weekend the Ladies were hoping to build on the previous week’s victory when they played Auchinleck at home. They started off really well, holding an 11-shot advantage after five ends played.

At the halfway stage Auchinleck were trying to reduce the deficit but Arbroath still led by 13 shots. In the third quarter of the game they began to forge further ahead and after 15 ends played they were leading by 21 shots. They kept building on this lead and ran out convincing winners by 93 shots to 56 shots.

GENTS

Last Saturday the gents travelled to Bathgate to play the opening League game against Balbardie. Some of the Arbroath players were finding it hard to adapt to the surface and were 11 shots down after five ends played. By the halfway stage Arbroath had closed this gap narrowly to nine shots. Balbardie increased their lead to 14 shots but in the last quarter of the game Arbroath put in a grandstand finish with Arbroath still behind by 2 shots. With one rink left to come off they picked up 3 shots to win by 1 shot overall.
