MONTROSE Lynx Ladies’ Rugby Club is on the lookout for new players of all ages and ability. The newest branch of the Montrose Rugby Club is gradually growing in strength following successful participation this season in the national development league however we are still missing the key element required for a rugby team – enough players.
Women’s rugby is a sport that will challenge you and reward you in a way that no other sport can. It is a game that incorporates skill, strength, conditioning, and teamwork. There are no size requirements or restrictions and no experience is necessary, simply a desire to have some fun and try something new.
The Lynx are holding a taster session on Wednesday (March 7) at 6.30 p.m. and they are inviting ladies to come along, give it a go, ask questions and then join them for refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards. The club welcomes players from the age of 13 upwards and a couple of the players have not found middle-age to be a barrier to participation!
Training sessions currently run once a week on a Wednesday evening from 6.30 to 8 p.m. under the watchful eye of coach Graham Thom. In these sessions as well as working on rugby skills, we also work on fitness and conditioning.
Players come from all over Angus. Vicky Martin from Arbroath was drawn in to the game both through the fun and fitness aspect as well as the social side. She says: “Rugby has an image of being rough and bruising but its great fun, we always have a laugh during the training sessions as well as getting a good work out. The teams that we have met through development days have been really friendly and encouraging.”
Vicky has excelled at rugby to the extent that she is now a member of the Scotland Under-20 squad and regularly trains at Murrayfield.
So if you are interested in giving it a ‘try’ then come along to the taster session which will be run at Union Park, Whinfield Road, Montrose, at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday or contact them at Montroseladiesrugby@gmail.com , 07873587375 or through our Facebook page ‘Montrose Ladies Rugby’.
Good win for Thistle
Brechin thistle 4, Blairgowrie 1
BRECHIN Thistle Ladies Hockey Club played Blairgowrie on Saturday.
In a slow start to the game many short corners were awarded and Brechin used these to great effect. Anne Pedgrift scored from the top of the ‘D’ and Ashleigh Leslie scored from a rebound.
In between Blairgowrie pulled a goal back. Before the first half was over Ashleigh Leslie saw a shot rebound off the post but Laura Gray was in position to put the ball to the backboard.
Despite an enthusiastic approach in the second half, Thistle had to wait until two minutes from time for Ashleigh Leslie to score from the byline when she back-sticked the ball under the goalie’s foot and into the net.
Squad: Katie August, Jane Cargill, Laura Gray, Susan Gray, Christina Greenaway, Tash Houghton, Kelly Herron, Ashleigh Leslie, Rachel Myles, Anne Pedgrift and Susan Pedgrift.
Player’s players: Ashleigh Leslie and Jane Cargill. League Player: Ashleigh Leslie.
If anyone is interested in joining the Thistles then come along to training at the All weather pitch in Arbroath on Tuesdays between 7.30 and 9.15 p.m.
