THE WEEKEND was a busy time for two of the younger boxers from Arbroath Boxing Club.
Deon Johnston made the long trip to Fraserburgh Leisure Centre on Saturday for a return bout against Kincorth’s Connor Crowe.
Having won their previous bout, Johnston started in confident mode with fast two fisted attacks bringing success in the first round.
Crowe came out for the second with determination and the two stood toe-to-toe as they strived for dominance.
In the final round Crowe pushed forward at every opportunity but Johnston defended well and soon took control with his fast hard counters.
Deon Johnston won a very convincing points decision over a much improved Connor Crowe.
On Sunday the action moved to the Skyaxe Kickboxing Club, Dundee, where Lewis Keith was matched against Dylan Philips, Dundee ABC.
Both started with tight defences, the taller Philips using his reach advantage to good measure as the round progressed, just edging in front.
Philips started the second where he left off, but Keith used good upper-body movement and neat footwork to stay out of trouble landing clever counters as he worked his way onto contention.
Keith took control of the final round , picking his punches, landing on target with some clubbing blows.
Philips fired back but Keith maintained his composure and kept turning the screw, keeping the pressure on and taking the round.
It was bound to be a close decision and Lewis Keith just lost out by a one point margin, the verdict going to Dyllan Phillips.
Both of these young boxers are showing signs of real quality and ability, improving with every bout and showing great maturity in the ring.
With a growing pool ofyoung boxers waiting in the wings the future of Arbroath Boxing Club looks secure for years to come.
