THE 2011 edition of the SG Baker Winter Duathlon Series, supported by Angus Bike Chain, was concluded on Sunday at Monikie Park.
The series is run over three races in December, January and February each year and attracted a field of 125 runners and cyclists for each event. Also supporting the event this year were Sweatshop Dundee and Run 4 It specialist running shop, Dundee.
Race one was a nice easy introduction with a four-kilometre run in the park and 20 kilometre bike on the surrounding roads. A small flurry of snow just prior to the start made sure things were a little trickier for the bike but despite this Ewan Taylor, Perth Road Runners, put in a strong performance to hold off the fastest of the cyclists, R.G. McLean, Angus Bike Chain CC and Robert Harrison, Perth Tri Club. Shona Robertson of the Shettleston Harriers club led the ladies home, just in front of Sandra Tulloch, East Fife Tri Club and Polly Tandy, Deeside Thistle CC. Roddy Horne, Perth Tri Club was the first of the under-18s.
These same names were to set the pace in a sunny race two which saw the athletes tackle a second four-kilometre run after the bike section. Past series winner Steven Clark, Fife AC, put in an appearance to take second place on the day from a dominant Taylor, with R.G. having to settle for fourth behind Harrison, who proved to be the better runner of the two. This time though, Shona Robertson had to settle for third in the ladies’ race behind a very strong Gillian Palmer (unattached and at 12th overall) and Joanne Thom (EdinbuR.G.h RC). Horne still dominated the under-18s from Kirriemuir lad Rory Dyce.
The first attempt at race three on February 5 was snowed off and the postponed event went ahead on Sunday under a beautiful blue sky but a sub zero temperature. With a number of competitors missing this re-scheduled race the final series prizes were up for grabs for anyone who was able to put together three good performances.
In the men’s race Ewan Taylor yet again showed how much his cycling had improved on the 40-kilometre two-lap bike section sandwiched by two four-kilometre runs as R.G. McLean managed to get close on the bike but in the final run was only able to manage fourth behind Ronald Gauld (unattached) and Robert Harrison.
For the ladies, Joanne Thom finished over six minutes ahead of Shona Robertson, but having missed race one Thom was out of the running for the series and Robertson took it from Laura Sarkis (Deeside Thistle CC) and Anna Harris (Angus Bike Chain CC).
With Horne not able to race this time in the junior category, Rory Dyce (Websters High School) took those honours.
In the other age categories, Paul Fettes (Monifieth Tri Club) took the male over-40, R.G. McLean the over-50 and Richard Burton (Fleet Feet Triathletes) the over-60 male category. For the ladies, Sarkis was the first senior with Robertson leading the over-40s and Sue Whisler taking the prize for the over-60s. The team prize was dominated from day one by the Angus Bike Chain trio of R.G. McLean, Peter Flick and David Miller.
