WHAT a difference a week makes! Abbey Bowling Club unfortunately headed downhill from winning 7-0 last week to losing by the same margin as they suffered defeat in all three rinks in the Seniors’ Angus League at home to Carnoustie West End.

The final of the club seniors’ mixed triples was won by Beryl Kennedy, Gertrude Skea and John Lowson who beat Ann Taylor, May Dundas and David Mitchell 18-5.

Last Wednesday, Abbey had three representatives playing at home in the first round of the Forfarshire singles. Bob Skea was narrowly defeated 21-20 by Carnoustie West End’s Mike Black. In the under-25 category, Craig Paton won 21-15 against Kirriemuir’s Chris Glendinning, while Sean Matthew lost to Brechin’s Michael Baillie 21-12.

In the afternoon Colin Cargill, J.S. Paterson, D. Wilson and Ron Wilson were at Broughty playing Orchar Park in the first round of the Barclay Cup and won 28-18.

Fridays night’s Angus League game was away to Dudhope. Abbey were nine shots down after eight ends but fought back gamely and were only four behind by the 12th end. Unfortunately they then lost heavily across the board giving Dudhope the game 56-36.

The ladies’ friendly was at home against Newgate. Nina Sibley’s rink was defeated 16-11 while Emma Philip’s rink won 16-8 to give the game to Abbey 27-24.

In the semi-finals of the ladies’ championship rinks, the first was won by Divina McGregor, Mabel Main, May Smith and Doreen Thomson who beat Alice Anderson, Margaret Croll, Nina Sibley and Emma Philip 15-13, The other was won by Lynn Whammond, Ann Burnett, Margaret Fraser and Helen Calder who defeated Morag Mann, Helen Ross, May Dundas and Sheila Geddes 14-12.

In the first round of the Ladies’ Forfarshire singles, Kath Gordon won 21-10 against Helen Calder of Lochlands.

Mary Stewart, Joyce Wilson and Margaret Croll won through to the next round of the Senior Ladies’ Scottish rinks beating Carnoustie West End 16-12. In the Ladies’ Scottish Rinks, Margaret Fraser, Liz Lowson, Ella Webster and Morag Mann beat Maryfield 25-22, and the first round of the Angus and Perthshire pairs was won by Lynn Whammond and Helen Calder who beat Letham 15-13.

Legion singles

The singles championship of the Arbroath branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland took place at Dishlandhill on Sunday. Bill Cadger beat Jim Bogue in the final. There was a field of 10 players who endured windy conditions during the afternoon.

Anniversary game

Arbroath Bowling Club held their third 150th anniversary game on Monday.

A total of 10 clubs from the local area were represented and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

The highest scoring visitors’ rink was made up of players from Muirhead & Birkhill and Parkview.

Newgate Club

THE NEWGATE team of Bob Spence, Alec Cargill, Tom Pullar and Paul Gersok (skip) progressed to the second round of the Barclay Cup competition last Wednesday by virtue of a 22-18 victory over Errol.

They played Broughty in the second round on Wednesday.


The first rounds of the Forfarshire competitions were played last week.

Newgate results and fixtures are as follows:

Singles - Graham Skelton lost to Hillside, 21-11; pairs - Wullie Smith and Wullie Smith (2) play at home against Hope Paton on Wednesday (June 8); triples - Ron Heenan, Brian Robertson and Sye Pearson made the second round with a 17-15 win over Carnoustie West End; rinks - Willie Johnston, Alec Cargill, Ken Swan and Charlie Cooper play away against Abbey on Wednesday (June 8).

In the Rennie Taylor Trophy competition, the Newgate team of John McIlhatton, Willie Johnston, Paul Martin and Eric Martin visited Hillside and lost by four shots.

Bowls Scotland

Four Newgate teams played at different venues on Thursday in the third round of the Bowls Scotland competition .

Results were: singles - Scott Sibley travelled to Canmore and secured a 21-19 victory over Montrose; pairs - Dave Hodgens and Forbes Szatan played at Abbey and lost 16-17 to Craigie after an extra end: triples - John Stirling, Eric Martin and Dave Swankie played at Carnoustie West End where they lost 18-9 to Lochee; rinks - Tom Reid, Alec Napier, Graeme Fechlie and Sandy Smith played at Craigie and recorded a 16-14 victory over Carnoustie West End.

Semi-final matches which took place last night (Thursday) were: singles - Scott Sibley played Carnoustie at Broughty Castle; rinks - played at Broughty Castle against Baxter Park.

Newgate travelled to meet Canmore on Friday in an Angus League match and in a closely contested game lost by five shots.

The two-bowl, 11-ends Pend Trophy competition was played on Sunday when Alan Low defeated Tom Reid in a closely contested final.

Invitation Fours

Eric Martin, Graeme Fechlie, Alan Caird and Jim Spence represented Newgate Bowling Club at the Broughty Castle Invitation Fours last Sunday.

They reached the semi-final before being defeated by Abbey.

In the Barnhill Invitation Fours on Sunday, Newgate was represented by Eric Martin, Alec Cargill, Paul Gersok and Sandy Smith. Again the Newgate team reached the semi-final before going out to Scone Recreational who went on to win the tournament.

125 celebration game

Newgate Bowling Club will hold their third mixed rink invitation game on Monday (June 6) to mark the 125th anniversary of the club. Taking part will be teams from the Scottish Bowling Association, Carnoustie West End, Letham, Duffus Park, Invergowrie and Barnhill.

Members are asked to check notice boards for team selections.

Memorial mixed triples

The Memorial Mixed Triples round-robin tournament which was due to take place on Sunday has now been postponed until Sunday, September 18.

The Newgate team of Stephanie Caird, Barbara Park and Pat Smith travelled to Carnoustie on Sunday when they were defeated 18-9 by the ladies from Barnhill in the Bowls Scotland Triples.

Tayside Ladies’ Triples

On Friday, the Newgate ladies’ team comprising Stephanie Caird, Sharon Caird and Isobel Anderson journeyed to Parkview where they recorded a comfortable 18-5 win over Kirriemuir.
