Kingennie

You would not believe it’s winter at Forbes of Kingennie this past week. The water has cleared really well over the last couple of weeks and the amount of fish activity has been phenomenal.

The Burnside has been the pond to fish now that the water has cleared. Over the course of the weekend there were eight fished caught for 15lbs, as well as 102 caught and released by a total of 14 rods. Mr Darren Phinn had a fantastic session releasing 24 fish including a rainbow estimated at over 6lbs fishing lures on a sunk line. Mr Barlow has continued to show the catching potential of buzzers at this time of year by landing 30 fish in four hours fishing over the weekend.

The water in the Boathouse has become very clear and the fish have responded well to the improved clarity. They have been well spread around the pond falling to nearly any method. Young Logan Cumming continued to show his ability by landing a 5lbs 15ozs rainbow on a hot head damsel. Mr Bell had two for 8lbs and Mr Watson also had two for 8lbs, including a 5lbs blue trout. The Bankside hasn’t been quite as busy as the Burnside but it has still been producing some good bags of fish including some lovely blue trout. The Ferry Fly Dressers took 16 fish for 33lbs for the seven rods that fished. Mr Marshall released eight fish on diawl bachs and Mr Sherriff returned seven on nymphs.

The Woodside has seen nearly every rod that has fished leave with at least one fish, however most people have bagged up no problem. Powerbait has taken most fish but the spinner has also been very good as the fish haven’t been too far from the edges. Mr Hogan took his four fish for 6lbs in 35 minutes on powerbait. Mr Brown also did well after moving to where he saw some fish splashing and went on to land eight fish for 14lbs.

Tayside Singles

It is Arbroath’s turn to host the 2013/14 Tayside Singles competition and this season’s event will be played at the Cliffburn Hotel, on Saturday, February 1. The draw will be timed with the first sign-in time of 9.30 a.m. Entry forms and flyers will be distributed in the next few days.

The deadline for entries is 7 p.m. on Friday, January 24. The draw will be carried out as soon as possible thereafter and announced on the ADPL website and in the Arbroath Herald.

The format, it is hoped, to start with best of five frames. Players should note this will be wholly dependent on the number of entries received and may have to be reduced to best of three in the first round.

The competition will be played to SPA Blackball Rules. The tournament director reserves the right to introduce the one minute rule, if it is deemed necessary.

Willie McCartney Singles

The Scottish Pool Association has announced the entry deadline for this year’s Willie McCartney Singles is March 2. This event is run in a similar fashion to the IMs and Scottish Singles with the SPA carrying out the draw and then the players arranging their own matches between themselves at a time/venue, etc., that suits both players. These matches will be best of 11 frames.

As with previous years, the SPA will vet the list of entries submitted and players deemed not eligible will be removed and have their entry fee refunded. The SPA have already indicated that players excluded in previous years are still exempt from entering.

The number of qualifiers to the national finals is determined on a pro-rata basis once all entries are received. The more entries Arbroath has, the higher the number of qualifiers the town will receive. Last year Arbroath had 38 entries and there were nine qualifiers.

The national finals will be held over the weekend of June 21/22 at Hustlers, Rosyth. Entry remains £5 per player. The deadline for Arbroath entries is Tuesday, February 25. For further information contact the match secretary.
