Grassroots tournament

This year’s Arbroath and District Pool League Grassroots competition will be played on Saturday, November 30, at the Cliffburn Hotel.

If the entries are similar to last year, then the draw will be timed with the first session starting at 9.30 a.m. Players entering should, therefore, be prepared to start at 9.30 a.m.

The entry fee remains at just £3, offering players great value for money. Entry forms and posters will be distributed to all captains/venues as soon as possible.

This event is open to all up-and-coming registered players from all teams and to encourage as high an entry as possible the top players are not eligible to enter.

Rules will be the usual SPA Blackball Rules, and matches will be best of five to begin with. Again, this will be dependent on entries. The deadline for entries is Friday, November 22, to allow for the draw to be carried out in advance.

skiing

New season under way

Arbroath Ski Club’s 2013/14 season is well under way at the dry ski slope at RM Condor.

And last Thursday the club welcomed Sandy, Dave and Natalie Beattie, three generations of the family, who dropped in to see lessons in operation and catch up with club members.

Sandy and his wife Sheila, now retired, were instrumental in setting up Arbroath Ski Club in 1987 and son Dave, who now lives in the French Alps, is a highly successful ski holiday tour operator.

His company skivo2 specialises in catered chalet holidays with tuition in Courchevel, one of the premier resorts in the Alps.

Daughter Natalie continues the family’s preoccupation with all things skiing and congratulations to her on achieving British champion in slalom and British number two in giant slalom. Natalie remains a member of the club.

The club provides ski lessons for local children many of whom participate in school ski trips and they are able to learn the fundamentals on the dry ski slope. The club caters for all levels from beginners through to improvers and race training and there are limited spaces for lessons available for the next block which starts on October 29.

The club meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and further information on membership and lessons can be found on their website www.arbroathskiclub.co.uk
