Arbroath United v Heriots

HERIOTS won the toss and sent United into bat at Lochlands on Saturday. Harsha Vithana (50 from 42 balls, 4 fours, 3 sixes) and Ross Mclean (26 from 50 balls) brought up 50 in the 12th over and had reached 90 when the introduction of Mark Watt (3 for 28) saw them both dismissed in the 16th over with Bradley Kneebone claiming a stumping and a catch respectively.

A further two wickets quickly fell with Kneebone involved in both as United reached 103 for 4 after 23 overs. Calvin Burnett (26 from 38 balls, 4 fours) then had partnerships of 23 with Greig Peal and 21 with Marc Petrie before he was run out in the 34th over. Petrie (37 from 40 balls, 1 four, 2 sixes) was joined by Ben McGill and they added 40 before Petrie was caught by Allaudin Faroog from the bowling of Cameron Farrell.

The innings ended strongly as McGill (unbeaten 34 from 50 balls) and Darren Spink added 36 before Spink was dismissed in the final over, United closing on 226 for 9.

In reply, Steve Knox and David Ross found runs difficult to come against the bowling of McGill and Matthew Hurst and when the latter had Ross caught by Petrie only 24 had been scored from 12 overs. The introduction of Calvin Burnett into the bowling attack saw a further two wickets quickly fall.

Kneebone and Farrell took the total to 61 in the 26th over when Farrell was caught by Greig Peal from the bowling of Craig Ramsay. A further 30 runs was added by Kneebone and Peter Ross before the latter was bowled by Burnett. Peal claimed the wicket of Watt and Burnett(5 for 23) had another two victims including Kneebone (29 from 71) as the visitors slipped to 106 for 8 in the 38th over.

Keith Morton (30 from 39 balls) and Farooq added 51 for the ninth wicket in the remaining 12 overs as Heriots closed on 157 for 8, United winning by 69 runs and claiming fifth place in the final league table. Morrisons man of the match was Calvin Burnett (Arbroath United) and the match was sponsored by JM Henderson.

Arbroath United v Barclays Wealth Grange

THE WEST Lothian ground staff had worked hard on the Boghall making the pitch playable on Sunday, but in the event the start was delayed 40 minutes to allow the pitch to further dry out, reducing the CS Trophy final to 45 overs a side.

United were sent into bat and reached 21 in the 5th over before Ross McLean was caught by Simon Smith from the bowling of Rajeev Routray. The introduction of the spin attack saw the run rate decrease in the difficult conditions and Fraser Burnett was caught by Ryan Flannigan from Gregor Maidens bowling in the 10th over with the total on 36.

United kept the scoreboard ticking over but lost Harsha Vithana (28 from 48 balls) in the 16th over when he was run out and three overs later Darren Spink was caught by Arun Pillai from Andrew Brock’s bowling to leave United on 62 for 4 after 19 overs.

Greig Peal (17 from 59 balls) and Calvin Burnett (20 from 38 balls) rebuilt the innings in reaching 98 in the 32nd over but when they attempted to increase the run rate Burnett was run out. Ben McGill (unbeaten 35 from 31 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) led the way for the later batsmen as Maiden (3 for 19) returned to claim a further two wickets and United closed on 154 for 9 from their 45 overs.

When Grange batted, Gregor Maiden (29 from 39 balls, 2 fours, 1 six) and Sanjay Patel (26 from 29 balls, 4 fours) took advantage of the now faster outfield and had an opening partnership of 54 before Patel was caught by Murray Clark from Calvin Burnett’s bowling. Harsha Vithana (2 for 22) quickly claimed a further two wickets, including Maiden as Grange reached 67 for 3 in the 17th over.

Giles Holmes was joined by Simon Smith (38 from 44 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) and they added 48 before Smith was bowled by Craig Ramsay.

United had a glimmer of hope when Fraser Burnett caught Henry Edwards from Ramsay’s (2 for 29) bowling four runs later but this was quickly extinguished as George Munsey (31 from 27 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes) joined Holmes and they took Grange to a five-wicket victory in the 37th over.

The Cricket Scotland man of the match was Gregor Maiden (Grange) and the trophy was presented to Andrew Brock by the Cricket Scotland past president Bob MacFarlane who also presented Fraser Burnett with a plaque as runners-up
