Arbroath United v Penicuik

ARBROATH United gained valuable match practice with both bat and bowl as they defeated Penicuik by 138 runs at Lochlands on Saturday.

Fraser Burnett (80 from 55 balls, 7 fours, 5 sixes) and Ben McGill (67 from 99 balls, 6 fours) laid the foundation for the batting with a partnership of 149 before Burnett retired after 21 overs. McGill was joined by Matthew Gove (32 from 46 balls) and they added a further 40 runs before McGill was dismissed by Kris Steel in the 30th over.

United closed on 239 for 3 from their 40 overs with Marc Petrie unbeaten on 20 from 27 balls.

When Penicuik batted Ben McGill and Calvin Burnett (2 for 17) took the game away from them as they conceded only 30 runs in the opening 16 overs with three wickets falling. Ryan Plomer claimed a wicket as Penicuik reached 69 for 4 after 26 overs.

The introduction of the spin attack brought the game to a swift conclusion as they were dismissed for 101 in the 35th over with Craig Ramsay taking 5 wickets for 10 runs and Greig Peal claiming the other wicket. Andrew Harrison top scored with 34 from 42 balls (4 fours, 1 six)

Arbroath United v Forfarshire

United’s senior team completed their pre-season friendlies when they defeated Forfarshire by three wickets in a close encounter at Lochlands on Sunday.

Again the players got a good work out with all six bowlers claiming at least one wicket as Forfarshire were dismissed for 141 in the 38th over, the innings being highlighted by a partnership of 53 for the fifth wicket by Craig Wallace (41 from 60 balls, 4 fours) and Dean Fearn (23 from 43 balls).

When United batted they steadily lost wickets and after 25 overs were 78 for 6 with Ross McLean unbeaten on 35. McLean who batted throughout (unbeaten 75 from 121 balls, 5 fours) was joined by Matthew Gove (20 from 39 balls) and they added 62 before on the verge of victory Gove was caught by Callum Walker from Matthew Parker’s bowling. United went on to win by three wickets with 11 balls remaining.

Season under way

Arbroath United v Prestwick

United open their Scottish Cup campaign when they entertain Prestwick who this season play in the Western Conference Championship Division.

The match, at Lochlands tomorrow (Saturday), is sponsored by the Round Table and commences at 12 noon.
