Arbroath United v Heriots

Arbroath United elected to bat in their Premier Division match against Heriots at Goldenacre on Saturday and made a steady start.

Brendon Ford and Ross McLean reached 35 in the 10th over before the latter was trapped lbw by Cameron Farrell. Ford who reached his half century from 62 balls received good support from Hamish Bartlett and they took the total to 98 in the 22nd over when the latter was bowled by Mark Watt.

Ford (72 from 105 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) and Fraser Burnett advanced the total to 134 in the 32nd over when Ford was run out by a direct throw from Scott Lucas. Calvin Burnett and Darren Spink were both dismissed by Watt (3 for 57) as United reached 176 in the 40th over.

Fraser Burnett reached his half century from 46 balls, and in the final 10 overs 100 runs were added as he had partnerships of 69 with Marc Petrie and 31 with Ben McGill as United closed on 276 for 6 with Burnett being unbeaten on 106 (76 balls, 9 fours, 5 sixes).

When Heriots batted they scored quickly, reaching 55 from the opening 10 overs with David Ross (22 from 23 balls, 4 fours) leading the way. However, United were still in control of the game as Alvin Pollard (3 for 25) claimed three wickets and McGill one.

United then turned to the spin attack of Craig Ramsay (2 for 26) and Ross McLean (4 for 17) and only Keith Morton (13 from 18 balls) and Craig Adams (15 from 27 balls) reached double figures as Heriots were dismissed in the 31st over for 102, United winning by 174 runs.

With Aberdeenshire winning their game and Carlton losing a rain affected match, United returned to the top of the league with the three teams only separated by three points.

Arbroath United v Huntly

In their match against Huntly at Lochlands on Saturday, United were sent into bat and lost Jack Waller in the second over when he was bowled by Alex Brooks. Harris Carnegie (37, 6 fours) and Bryce Carnegie (23, 4 fours) took the total to 64 in the eighth over, but the introduction of Liam Ferguson (3 for 24) saw him claim three wickets in his first three overs as United slipped to 78 for 6.

Of the later batsmen Shaun Christie hit 18 (3 fours) as United were dismissed for 119 in the 23rd over with King, Mearns and Mitchell all claiming two wickets.

Huntly made a good start through Brooks (22, 4 fours) and Morrison as they reached 33 in the eighth over before Brooks was dismissed by Ryan Cameron.

A further two wickets quickly fell as they reached the tea interval on 34 for 3.

Despite Sutton,who was dismissed by Waller, hitting 31 (3 fours) United gained control of the game and Huntly were dismissed in the 25th over for 77 with Ryan Cameron (5 for 24) claiming five wickets and Craig Ross (3 for 8) claiming three. United won by 42 runs. The fixture was sponsored by Marco Davies.

Matches postponed

The inclement weather on Sunday saw both the Murgitroyd Trophy fixture at Lochlands against Aberdeenshire and the Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Second Division North fixture in Aberdeen against Arrowdawn Gordonians X1 postponed.

Stoneywood/Dyce v Arbroath

United travel North to meet Stoneywood/Dyce tomorrow (Saturday) who they defeated a fortnight ago in the Scottish Cup. This will be a keenly fought game as both teams require the victory. Stoneywood/Dyce have had a difficult time in the league and are currently just above SMRH in seventh place in the league.

The club’s second teams meet at Lochlands tomorrow (Saturday) in the Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Premier Division. United had a good win last week against Huntly while Stoneywood/Dyce narrowly lost a high scoring game against the league leaders Mannofield. The match is sponsored by Lindsay Wood and commences at 1 p.m.

Barclays Wealth Grange v Arbroath United

United travel to Portgower Place, Edinburgh, on Sunday for the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. Both sides have played well to reach this stage and although the composition of the teams are like to be affected by the Saltires and Under-19 European qualifiers it should be a close contest. The other semi-final is also in Edinburgh with Carlton playing Clydesdale.

Arbroath United v Caledonian Highlanders Under-18s

United have a second fixture in the Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Premier Division on Sunday when they entertain Caledonian Highlanders who play each of the sides once during the season. The match starts at 1 p.m.

United XI make the short journey to at Guthrie Park , Brechin, on Sunday to play their closest rivals in the Clubsport Strathmore & Perthshire Second Division North.
