A FORMER ARBROATH girl has become the first person to win a prestigious karate championship two years running.
Ericka Barker (12) won the Kawasoe Cup for the second consecutive year at the UK Traditional Karate Championships in Blackpool.
She moved to Cardonald in January after growing up in Arbroath, where she attended Timmergreens Primary School and Arbroath High School.
She was a member of the Brothock Shotokan Karate Club, but now belongs to a Glasgow karate club.
At the competition Ericka won silver in the Junior Open Kata under 15s girls’ event and then gold in the brown and black belt Kata which is open to both boys and girls under 15 years.
She took gold in the Team Kata and then another gold in the Individual Kumite for under 15s and finished off with a bronze in the Team Kumite.
Sensei Kawasoe, Eighth Dan, presented Ericka with the Kawasoe Cup.
Her grandmother, Pam Whyte, said: “It is a huge understatement to say we are proud of her achievements.
“I think the reason that Ericka does so well is her extreme dedication to the sport.”
