On Sunday, the mixed triples competition was poorly supported. However, seven teams took part in a round robin competition which resulted in a win for Liz Lowson, Dave Beattie and Fred Cook, who beat Frank Farmer, Ann Taylor and Ian Croll 5-4.

Also played on Sunday were the finals of the Forfarshire competitions held at Abroath Bowling Club. In the fours, Abbey’s Jim Cuthill, Brian Williams, Tom Coull and Dave Middleton won 14-13 against Kirriemuir to bring home Abbey men’s first piece of silverware for the season.

Other results were: the triples were won by Hope Paton who beat Logie 18-9; the pairs went to Newgate who won 19-11 against Ardler, and in the singles, Mike Black, of Carnoustie West End, failed to make it four in a row, losing to Mike McWalter, Arbroath, 21-11. The under-25 singles was between two Arbroath players Scott Teviotdale and David Henderson and David won 21-15.

The seniors Angus League drew to its conclusion this week with Abbey playing host to Brechin Parkview. The visiting side included a number of players who had put Abbey out of the Top Ten last week. As expected, it was a close game untill the last few ends when Abbey pulled away to win 7-0. Unfortunately, winning the last two games was not enough for Abbey to retain the league flag and the club finished in second place on 57 points to Canmore’s 68,

Angus Top Ten

TWO OF the big guns locked horns in the first round of the Top Ten at The ‘Hill on Thursday night and as expected a big crowd was treated to a high quality match with the Maroons running out a 6-2 victory against Carnoustie West End who may have thought pay back time was due after the Maroons last-gasp league title win but The ‘Hill had become a fortress and it proved to big an ask for the ‘Westies’.

On Thursday night, the second round took place with another home draw against Letham and the main dilemma for selectors is who to leave out of the team!

Bowls Scotland

This week sees the National finals at Ayr. The best of luck to our Men’s Fours and Ladies’ Triples as they attempt to bring more glory to the club.

Forfarshire Finals

The Forfarshire finals took place at The ‘Hill last Sunday and the Maroons were involved in two of the finals.

The Junior Singles was an all-Arbroath final with Davie Henderson taking on Scott Teviotdale. In a close match it was ‘Hendo’ who edged home 21-14.

In the Singles final, ‘the battle of the Mikes’, it was McWalter who overcame three-time champion Black 21-10. Winning the two singles finals was great stuff, but the big plus is the age of the players who are producing the goods for the Maroons, all of which bodes well for the future.

Ladies’ Section

Once again the friendly game was curtailed due to bad weather, but Newgate emerged winners when the game was abandoned after 11 ends.
