Top title still in the balance

ARBROATH and District Pool League’s First Division title still hangs in the balance with Portcullis (1) in prime position. However, they face a tricky last match against last year’s champions Ram’s Heid (2).

Second placed Cliffburn (1) face an equally tough trip to Letham (1) and will be hoping Portcullis slip up. Meanwhile Railway (1) climbed into fourth place and will hope to beat Stag next week to finish the season on a high.

At the bottom a three-way dogfight will see one of Legion (1), Station (1) and Ram’s Heid (1) relegated.

With Bowlers having wrapped up the Division Two title last week, attention turned to the runners-up spot and automatic promotion to Division One for next season. Legion (3) lead the pack and have it in their own hands.

Portcullis (3), St Tams and West Port Bar are hot on their tails and will be hoping for a slip-up from them. The last round of fixtures has thrown up a big match when St Tams host Legion (3).

Portcullis Singles

This year’s Portcullis Singles event will be held on Saturday, May 11. No entries will be taken on the day. Deadline for entries will be Tuesday (May 7), which is the last league fixtures, to allow draw and timings to be finalised. Entry fee is £5 per player.

Start time for first ties on Saturday is totally dependent on entries but may be 9.30 a.m. prompt. The draw will be posted online.

The draw will provide a guide-only for timings. It is the player’s responsibility to be in attendance in good time before their name is called. Once your name is called however, and you are not in attendance, you will be docked one frame per minute until you either appear or are knocked out by default.

Prize money will be dependent on total entries but as a guide has previously been £150 to the winner. A trophy will also be awarded to the winner. This competition is restricted to Arbroath and District Pool League registered players only. For more information contact Steve Webster on 07585 441095.

A.J. Beedie Jewellers Arbroath Open

The 2013 A.J. Beedie Jewellers Arbroath Open will be held at Seaton House, Seaton Estate, Arbroath on Saturday, May 18.

The deadline for entries is Friday, May 10. This will allow all entries to be collated and the draw carried out in advance. Entry remains at £5 per player and matches will begin, as a minimum, as best of five frames.

Rules will be SPA Blackball, with players lagging the first frame with alternative breaks from then on. Players are to referee their own matches with a floating referee in place on the day. The tournament director reserves the right to introduce the one-minute rule at any time to prevent slow play.

Last year saw a record field of 123 entries. As the tournament name suggests it is an open event and therefore entries are encouraged and welcomed from players not registered locally. You do not have to be registered to a pool team to compete, but you should be familiar with the Blackball rules.

In the past the competition has attracted entrants from Dundee and further afield including Glasgow, Aberdeen and Falkirk. Players from local leagues including Perth, Montrose, Forfar, Brechin, Carnoustie have also continued to support this event.

Entry forms and flyers have been distributed to all captains. Those registered on the website (www.arbroath.scottishpool.com) can also obtain the entry form from the ‘download’ section.
