Rresults from around the local greens

WITH most competitions having been played early or on hold due to holidays, it is quiet at Abbey Bowling Club during the week.

What is good to see is the junior members taking advantage of the greens being free and playing afternoons and evenings as well as joining in with members for bounce games. Congratulations to Abbey member Kath Gordon on winning the Carnoustie Open!

Although Abbey lost all three fixtures at the weekend, members enjoyed one of their best weekends of the season with games on Saturday being away against Baxter Park at Dundee, and at home against Brechin.

Sunday’s match was against the Cumbria Association Touring team, a great bunch of lads. After the game, Ron Emerson, touring team co ordinator, thanked Dave Wilson, president, for the hospitality shown, saying it was one of the best venues they had played.

Angus Top Ten

The super Maroons continue their quest for top ten glory with their quarter final on Thursday (August 9) against Maryfield at Dishlandhill, with the semi- final on Sunday August 12 if successful.

These are massive games for the players who are hoping to complete the League and Cup double.

Charity friendly

Arbroath and Newgate bowling clubs raised £250 for Prostate Cancer in their friendly on Saturday, in conjunction with Bowls Scotland.

As only 10,000 pennies was asked to be raised the amount achieved was a fantastic effort. .Bowls Scotland

On a disappointing day, Arbroath Bowling Club’s men’s fours and ladies’ triples were knocked out of the National finals at Ayr Northfield.

The men’s fours never really got going and after being seven down after five ends they finished eight down at the end of the match.

The ladies’ triples fared better and after being one up with two ends to go lost a ghastly six and with it the match.

On a more positive note, the players of both teams received fantastic support at the finals.
