Rain puts paid to United’s weekend crunch clash at Carlton

Carlton v. Arbroath United

UNITED, electing to bat at Grange Loan on Saturday, made a good start through Marc Petrie (16 from 19 balls) and Fraser Burnett reaching 27 in the seventh over before Petrie was bowled by Gordon Drummond.

Burnett (23 from 48 balls) was joined by Harsha Vithana and a further 16 runs were added before Burnett was bowled by Omar Ahmad in the 12th over. Vithana could only watch as a further three wickets quickly fell (Drummond 2 for 21, Ahmad 2 for 32) as United reached 56 for 5 in the 18th over.

Vithana (unbeaten 27 from 39 balls) and Mark Edwards (unbeaten 9 from 41 balls) took the total to 68 in the 23rd over when play was suspended for 59 minutes due to rain. On the resumption they added a further 20 runs but the rain returned and the game was again stopped in the 28th over with United on 88 for 5.

There proved to be no further play and the match was abandoned with no decision being reached. With Forfarshire’s fixture also being abandoned United remain in second place.

Arbroath United v Huntly

United had an early success in the first over at Lochlands on Saturday when Craig Cameron had Roy Thomson caught by Gavin Swan. Callum Howard and Liam Ferguson progressed the score to 33 in the eighth over when Ferguson was dismissed by Craig Ross.

United claimed a third wicket in the 17th over when Ryan Plomer dismissed McKay with the total on 66. There then followed a partnership of 111 between Howard and Jack Mitchell (42, 6 fours) which was ended in the 38th over by Mark Fleming.

Howard went on to hit an unbeaten 123 (15 fours, 1 six) and had a further partnership of 66 with Amin before the latter was run out in the final over as was also the fate of Morrison, Huntly closing on 245 for 6 from their 45 overs.

When United batted Gavin Swan was dismissed by Jack Mitchell (2 for 17) in the third over with the total on 18 he claimed a further wicket four overs later when he had Alan Pedgrift (30, 6 fours) caught by Howard with the total on 38. Howard took a second catch to dismiss Jack Plomer this time from Amin’s bowling with the total on 51.

Their followed a partnership of 41 between Ryan Plomer (30, 4 fours) and Bryce Carnegie (22) before they both fell lbw to Mearns (3 for 20) who also claimed the wicket of Cameron. With the rain steadily increasing the match was abandoned after 25 overs with United on 102 for 6 with no decision being reached.

Scottish Cup final

Arbroath United Cricket Club is to host this year’s Scottish Cup final between Uddingston and Dunfermline on Saturday, August 20. The match will start at 12 noon.

This will be the first time that the final will have been played at Lochlands.

Entry to the ground will be £5 for both members and non-members with under-18s free.

No cars will be admitted into the ground on the day. Parking facilities are available to the rear of the cricket ground which can be accessed through Arbroath Indoor Bowling Club.

The club is hoping for an excellent turnout on the day and there will be barbecue, seafood platters and bar facilities available.
