Play-off will decide Division One pool championship

AS THE last games in Arbroath and District Pool League’s season are completed, Division One will be decided by the result of next week’s head-to-head between Ram’s Heid (2) and Abbey (1).

Ram’s Heid (2) recorded a comprehensive win over Portcullis (1) on Tuesday, while Abbey (1) had to dig deep at 6-4 down for a 6-6 draw against third placed Burns Bar (1).

This means there is a two-point gap at the table of the table. Ram’s Heid (2) only need a point to secure their third title in succession whereas Abbey (1) must win to force a further play-off. To help this, they will have home advantage in what is sure to be a tense and hard-fought encounter.

Elsewhere, Letham Hotel (1) overtook Portcullis (1) to claim fourth spot and that all-important cup seeding for next season while at the foot of the table, Pageant and Stag occupy the bottom two places.

In the event there are the same number of teams next year, a two-down, two-up principle will be in place and these teams will be relegated to Division Two.

Congratulations go to Legion (1) who are this season’s Division Two champions. With Portcullis (3) and Ship Inn snapping at their heels, only a win would do on Tuesday and they managed this in style, beating Station 7-5 at home.

As it turned out, both their challengers suffered defeats which made their own result irrelevant. As they are still involved in the Consolation Cup they will be looking at a potential ‘double’.

Although they lost on the night, Portcullis (3) claimed the runners-up spot and again, if the league structure remains the same next year they will be promoted to Division One.
