THE WEEKEND saw the return of the annual Arbroath and District Pool League Masters competition which was won by Paddy Nicoll. He defeated Ian Anderson 5-1 in the final.

Paddy, who was unbeaten throughout the group stages, continued his excellent form defeating Stuart Smith and Davie Williams on route to the final. He took home the top prize of £150 and a keepsake trophy for his efforts.

Ian Anderson won his group on frame difference and took the confidence from that into the knock-out stages to defeat the current Arbroath champion Steve Webster and then Davy Jack on his route to the final.

However, Ian came up against a formidable opponent in the final and lost only his second match of the day. For his effort he took home the runner-up prize of £90 and a keepsake trophy. Ian proved at his young age he can mix it with the best the town can offer and will undoubtedly make more finals in the years to come.

Thanks were extended to George and Lorraine Williams of the Portcullis for hosting and sponsoring the event.

IM 2013

A total of 42 players entered this tour last season and Arbroath and District Pool Leage felt it was encouraging to have such a positive response. The League, therefore, wishes to continue promoting this more widely among all interested pool players.

This is a great opportunity for players to improve their skills and compete at the highest levels in Scotland. To that end, entries are being invited for any interested player to join next season’s tour.

The IM Tour has been reviewed for the 2013 season and the number of events has increased from five to seven, each event carrying ranking points. As a result the fee has increased to £30 (previously £25). The Scottish singles is also included in the ranking scoring system (this costs a further £5 to enter and will be collected separately). Each player receives a ranking score based upon on their best six events out of the eight events mentioned.

There are local qualifiers held for each event and these are drawn by the SPA and sent to each IM rep. After this, the local players are permitted to arrange their own matches at a mutually agreed time and venue. The only stipulation is the match must be played before a predetermined deadline.

The deadline for submission of names, £30 fees and contact e-mail information is Saturday, December 1, 2012. Any interested players should contact Michael Bastow in the first instance for more information or visit the SPA website at www.scottishpool.com.

Scottish singles

The Scottish Pool Association Scottish singles national finals will be held over the weekend at the Erskine Bridge Hotel, Erskine. Arbroath have seven qualifiers travelling through to compete at the SPA’s flagship event.

The ADPL committee wished the best of luck to Graham Dunbar, Garry Mitchell, Steve Hamilton, Gareth Ruxton, Paddy Nicoll, Davie Williams and David Jack for the tournament.
