No joy for local fighters

ARBROATH Amateur Boxing Club members Jamie McDowell and Deon Johnston made the trip to Uddingston on Friday to take part in a show promoted by Viewpark ABC in Tannochside Miners’ Club.

Deon faced fellow Scottish Novice Champion Craig Fox, Viewpark. From the first bell the compact Fox took the fight to Johnston, driving him across to the ropes. Johnston cleverly turned him and countered with straight head and body shots.

Fox kept coming forward using hooks to head and body but Johnston defended well, countering with straight shots piercing Fox’s guard. The contest was fought at a tremendous pace for the three rounds, with the protagonists displaying the skill, ability and fitness of the two best boxers in Scotland at their age and weight category.

The judges, by a 3-2 majority, went for the home boxer, Craig Fox, giving Deon Johnston his first defeat but one from which he can take a lot of positives.

Jamie McDowell was matched against David Sexton, Viewpark, in a four round thriller. Sexton is a Scottish international boxer and last season was a semi-finalist in the Great Britain Championships so brought a wealth of experience to the contest. His southpaw style caused McDowell some problems at the start, his fast jab landing on target.

McDowell tightened his defence and countered with stinging right crosses and fast left hooks. Rounds two and three became a bit messy as the styles clashed, but McDowell’s determination and tighter defence was nullifying Sexton’s right leads. In the final round McDowell showed his growing ring maturity, adopting a change in his attacks to land straight shots to the body, giving Sexton all sorts of problems.

The judges’ verdict was a points win for David Sexton. Jamie McDowell had given him a hard contest and was a tad unfortunate to be on the losing side.

However, both he and clubmate Deon Johnston are keen for a re-match as they both feel they are more than capable of overturning their respective results.

Coach Jamie Norman hinted that this could take place at Arbroath Boxing Club’s next boxing dinner in the Royal British Legion Scotland clubrooms, Helen Street, on April 26 next year.

These would be two standout bouts for what is always an action-packed event.
