New outdoor season now in full swing

Abbey Club

ABBEY Bowling Club’s first friendly of the season was away to Carnoustie on Saturday. An excellent day’s bowling was enjoyed by all, complemented by fine weather and good company. Abbey came away winners by 153 - 164 shots.

Junior Coaching resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. when past and new members will be made welcome. Sunday sees the start of the Championship rinks and those wishing to play should attend by 9.45 a.m.

Arbroath Club

PRESIDENT Joe McKelvie welcomed 56 members to Arbroath Bowling Club’s 150th anniversary opening game.

Vice- president Eric Scott’s team allowed the president’s players a narrow victory.

‘Highest up’ rink on the day was from the president’s team, comprising Jack Millar, Brian Brazier, Ian Stott and Jack Clarke.

Club competitions are now posted on noticeboard and members are asked to check playing dates starting from tonight (Friday).

Lochlands Club

SATURDAY was opening day at Lochlands Bowling club and 34 members turned out for the traditional president v vice-president match.

Shrewd selection by president Robin Wilson ensured an emphatic 25-shot victory over vice-president John Smith’s team.

Hunter Cup

The first of the season’s competitions - the Hunter Cup - gets under way on Tuesday. The Newgate 1 team of Jim Butler, Ian Teviotdale, Sandy Smith and Brian Sibley (skip) travels to Carnoustie West End to play Kirriemuir 1. The Newgate 2 team, skipped by Billy Sturrock, plays on Thursday against the winner of Errol 2 and Monifieth 1.


Newgate seniors started the season on Tuesday away to Lochlands.

Ladies’ section

The ladies began their season’s friendlies with a local derby at home against the ladies of Arbroath.

Their next game on Tuesday (April 26) is away to Brechin.
