Medals galore for local athletes

ARBROATH and District Athletic Club athletes have had a busy time in the last few weeks of the summer competition season.

Under-20 competitor Michael Downie travelled to Stoke as part of the Scottish under-20 team to compete in the Home Counties Combined Events International. Michael’s excellent performance saw him setting a new under-20 Scottish record and secured him first place.

His results were: 100m – 11.65: long-jump – 6.32: shot-putt – 13.57: high-jump – 1.89: 400m – 51.74: 110mh – 15.97: discus – 36.91: pole vault – 3.54: javelin – 46.47: 1,500m – 4.43.55: points total – 6,547.

Under-17 athlete Ross Croall took part in the Bank of Scotland Junior Great Scottish 1.5K Run in Glasgow. His time of 4.27 saw him securing first place and coming home some 20 seconds ahead of the competition.

Two other under-17 athletes were in action at the UK School Games in Sheffield. Ellen Robertson and Callum Edwards were chosen as part of the Scottish team with Ellen triple-jumping to 10.44 and Callum recording a long-jump of 6.02:

On Sunday, many Arbroath athletes travelled to the George Duncan Stadium in Perth to compete in the Tayside and Fife Track and Field championships. A total of 52 medals were awarded to ADAC athletes and many were crowned event champions in their respective age groups and events.

Under-14, girls, Aillie Townsend, 75mh – 16.4; javelin – 12.80; shot-putt – 5.13: Kelsey Young, 200m – 37.3; long-jump – 2.79; javelin – 13.77: Nicola Fairlie, 800m – silver, 2.49.7: Anna Robertson, long-jump – bronze, 3.93; high-jump – bronze, 1.20; javelin – gold, 16.98: boys, James Payne, 100m – 14.0; 80mh – silver, 15.2; shot-putt – bronze, 8.02: Lewis Robertson, 100m – gold, 12.5; 200m – silver, 26.2; long-jump – silver, 4.61: Fin Sutherland, discus – silver, 23.69; javelin – silver, 27.35; shot-putt – gold, 9.25: Finlay Sutherland, discus – bronze, 13.56.
