Abbey Bowling Club had two games at home and one away on Saturday.

The home games were against Buckhaven, which Abbey won 83-65 to win back the Jean Rawlings Memorial Shield, and Victoria Park in which the shield headed back to Glasgow. Although the game was drawn at 68-68, Abbey lost on countback of ends won.

The away game was across town at Arbroath Bowling Club where Abbey lost 77-102 and held on to Rab’s Boots.

Ladies’ section

Abbey rinks skipped by Alice Anderson won 18 - 12 against Irene Teviotdale and Liz Lowson defeated June Websters rink 30 - 1 to give Abbey ladies their win against Arbroath.

Lynn Whammond, Gertrude Skea, Joyce Mathieson and Emma Philip went out after their first game at Ayr losing 17-9 to Tulliallan Bowling Club in terrible conditions, with heavy rain throughout the game.

Juniors

Abbey members representing Angus and Dundee in the SYBA finals at Ayr were Keiran Ross and Stuart Farmer in the singles. Both played well but failed to reach the play-offs.

In the pairs, Hazel Sime and Kyale Ross won three games, drew one and lost one. They missed qualifying by one shot. The other pair was Maison Ross and Darien Swankie. Playing for the first time in front of so many spectators they did exceptionally well.

In the triples Caitlin Waddilove with Ryan Halliday, Brechin, and Angus Redford, Kirriemuir, also played good bowls to come third in their section. The other triple - Dion Smith, Chris Lorimer and Sam MacKenzie - were all from Monifieth.

Senior Angus League

The Senior Angus League concluded with Abbey suffering a 5-2 defeat from Hope Paton.

Forfarshire finals

The Forfarshire finals were played at the Newgate green on Sunday. The under-25 singles final was an excellent game in which Abbey’s Kyale Ross defeated Parkview’s Scott Stewart 21-14.

Mike Stewart, of Carnoustie WE, won the gents’ singles 21-8, overcoming Eric Morris, Hillside. The pairs trophy was retained by Newgate duo Sy Pearson and Gary Davies in an exciting game that went to the last bowl giving them a 16-14 victory over Brechin’s Dave Wilson and Rick Lockhart.

In a one-sided game which saw the last three ends unplayed the triples went to Parkview’s Bill Allison, Mike Westmore and Ken Morrison who defeated Logie’s Bill Letchford, Ian Meek and Charlie Jeffery 26-7.

The fours went to Logie as Jim Stewart, John McKir, Bob Steele and Joe Craig won 19-11 when the Hillside rink of John Ritchie, Tom Easton, George Robertson and Chic Nicoll decided to call it a day with one end left.

Angus Top Ten

The Maroons saw off the challenge of Hillcrest with a workman like 62 scoreline setting up a quarter-final home tie against Canmore.

Victories for the pairs, triples and fours offset the only loss in the singles. Hopefully the Maroons can progress further as with the Top 5 they are Arbroath’s sole survivors.

Ladies’ Section

Two friendlies were played last week in glorious weather. Arbroath Ladies struggled to master the green at Abbey and ended with a heavy defeat, 48-13.

The ladies fared better in their home tie against Canmore.

Newgate Club

On Thursday evening Newgate were hosts to Carnoustie West End in the second round of the Angus Top Ten competition. In the early stages the honours were even across the rinks but in the later stages West End proved to be the stronger team winning three rinks out of the four to advance into the third round 6-2.

Gents’ Handicap Singles Final

On Friday evening last year’s Gents Handicap Singles final, which was held over, was played out between Forbes Szatan and Alan Low. Forbes got the better start in the game and built up a comfortable lead however Alan pegged his way back to within a couple of shots but Forbes finished the stronger player and crossed the finishing line first to take the honours.

Gents’ Club Rinks Final

Also last Friday evening saw the final of the Club Rinks for this season with the team of John McIlhatton, Brian Sibley, Scott Sibley and Alex Napier getting the better of the team of Jim Ramsay, Alfie Baird, Mike Flynn and Tom Reid.

Saturday friendlies

The scheduled home game with Letham was cancelled but the afternoon was filled with a challenge match between the ladies and gents.The gents triumphed with a two rinks to one victory and an overwhelming shots difference.

The friendlies for tomorrow (Saturday) are at home to Arbroath, sponsored by Lodge 101, and away to Newburgh with the away team bus leaving at 1 p.m.

Forfarshire Finals

The finals for the Forfarshire Competitions for 2013 were held at Newgate on Sunday (July 21) afternoon where the Newgate pair of Sye Pearson and Gary Davies were locked into battle with the pair from Brechin.

The Brechin pair started off well picking up four shots in the first end. Newgate came more into the game in the latter stages keeping up close behind until the penultimate end when they picked up a single to go ahead by one shot going into the last end. The last end produced an exchange of winning positions but it was the Newgate pair who finished one shot to the good taking the honours by two shots.

Angus Senior League

The final league game of the season was due to be played away to Boyle Park last Tuesday. Newgate were requiring full points to secure a chance of taking the league title from local rivals Arbroath and Monifieth who were also in contention. The weather delayed the outcome as the game was cancelled due to flooding.

Martin Fun Day

This Sunday (July 28) Newgate opens its doors to The Martin Fun Day with a relaxing round robin competition for bowlers and friends followed by a barbeque.

Ladies’ Section

On Thursday the ladies were hosts to near neighbours Carnoustie in a three rink friendly. Newgate won two rinks out of three but finished well down when the shots were tallied up.

Club Triples Final

Today( Friday) the final of the Ladies’ Club Triples takes place at 2.p.m between the triple of Isobel Johnstone, Mary Burnett and Pat Smith and the triple of Lesley McLeod, Norma Spence and Kathleen Swan.

Mina Cargill Trophy

Next Friday (August 2) the ladies meet at the green at 2.p.m to contest the Mina Cargill Trophy.
