Saturday will long remain in the memory of Arbroath Boxing Club’s youth middleweight Jamie McDowell as the date he became a Scottish Champion.
On Saturday morning he along with coach Jamie Norman and club mate Terry Ballantine, left early for the journey to Ravenscraig Sports Complex, Motherwell, and the ABS Ltd. Intermediate Scottish Championships.
Jamie’s semi-final opponent was Sartanus Gestautus, Peterhead ABC. From the start Gestautus powered forward putting pressure on McDowell. He kept a tight defence and blocked most of the incoming shots on elbows and gloves, countering with fast jabs and right crosses.
McDowell looked comfortable and confident in the second, his defence allowing nothing of consequence through and all the while landing with effective head and body counters.
Jamie was awarded a clear points victory by 7-3, and a three hour rest period as he advanced to the finals.
Daniel McLaren, Elgin, was the opponent he faced in the final. Having had the advantage of a bye into the final McLaren was fresh and eager forcing McDowell across the ring in his first attack.
In the final round McDowell drove McLaren across the ring with a furious two-fisted barrage that forced the Elgin boxer to hold on and try to survive.
He held the edge, and a game last ditch attack from McLaren was easily rebuffed by McDowell who took the title in impressive style with a winning points margin of 5-2.
Jamie’s performance, temerity and will to win had impressed the watching coaches from other clubs who commented favourably and roundly congratulated him on his success.
