Indoor prizes handed out at the Abbey Club

Abbey Club

ABBEY bowlers were at home to Canmore last Tuesday in the Seniors’ Angus League.

One home rink dominated and the other two kept the game tight. It was close run affair right up to the closing stages when Canmore went ahead in one and Abbey in the other. Both held on to their leads to give Abbey a 5-2 victory.

Also last Tuesday, Abbey (1) were at Broughty Castle in the Hunter Cup competition where they played Wormit (1) and beat them 19-15. This result took them into the quarter-finals held at Craigie on Thursday when they defeated Broughty Castle 20-12.

The semi-final was against Baxter Park (1) at Newport on Tuesday.

Friday night’s Angus League game was at home against Carnoustie West End who took a 10-shot lead early on. Abbey fought back to within one shot, but the visitors never lost the advantage and went on to win 61-42.

On Saturday night the club held its weekend carpet league presentation dance. Trophies were presented by Irene O’Neill, wife of the club president.

Hunter Cup final

The final of the Hunter Cup competition takes place at Newgate on Tuesday (May 17).

Finalists are Abbey and Maryfield.

Scotland seniors

In the preliminary round of the Bowls Scotland seniors’ competition the Newgate ‘A’ team of Wullie Smith (2), Sandy Cook, Jim Robbie and Harry Burnett (skip) progressed to the next round at the expense of Craigie ‘B’ with a winning margin of 10-8.

Their next match is on Monday (May 16) at Broughty against Maryfield ‘B’.

The Newgate ‘B’ team of Harry Bisset, Tom Cargill, Mike Flynn and Eric Milne (skip) play on the same day at Brechin against Montrose ‘B’.

Anniversary game

In the first of Arbroath Bowling Club’s 150th anniversary games last Monday, the Newgate team of Gibby Lawson, Alec Cargill, Charlie Cooper and Brian Sibley (skip) took the top team award.
