Dramatic changes in pool placings

THE LAST round of games, coupled with the completion of ‘catch-up’ matches, saw a few dramatic changes in the group tables.

In Group A, Kent Mitchell and Gareth Ruxton locked horns with Gareth winning by the slimmest of margins, 5-4. This lifted Gareth into second place in the group overall.

Group C saw the most dramatic end to the group stage. Jonathan Cargill lost out to Gordon Dickson 5-3 leaving Brian Craig with an outside chance of qualification. Brian took the opportunity and won his two remaining matches to equal Jonathan on points and frame difference. In this situation the players’ head to head record then takes precedence with Brian defeating Jonathan in the group stage. Brian took the final third qualifying space to the Premier Event.

Group D saw John Maud run out a 5-2 victor against Steve Reid and with that take second spot in the group with Steve narrowly missing out.

Group E saw Martin Cherry lose his grip on top spot and slip into third place on frame difference. Kenny McMillan confirmed his second place position with a 5-2 victory. Surprise package, Ricky Dewars, secured top spot by virtue of his own 5-2 victory.

Tam Walkinshaw, as expected, takes the 16th qualification space as the best fourth placed player.

The full list of qualifiers for the Premier Event is - Richard Paterson, Gareth Ruxton, Kent Mitchell, Paddy Nicoll, Greg Alexander, Drew Webster, Gordon Dickson, Steve Hamilton, Brian Craig, Graham Dunbar, John Maud, Kevin Brown, Ricky Dewars, Kenny McMillan, Martin Cherry and Tam Walkinshaw.

The draw will be carried out as soon as possible. All remaining players will play out the Plate Event.

Charity 24-hour Pool-a-thon

The Arbroath and Distrct Pool League 24-hour ‘Pool-a-thon’ returns for a second year and will again be held at the Portcullis, on August 18 and 19. Last year this event proved to be a fantastic fund-raiser, helping raise money which was split between both the ADPL and MacMillan Nurses.

Everyone involved had a brilliant time and it was agreed that it should continue as an annual event.

This year there will be 10 pool players keeping each other awake during the small hours for the benefit of the Pool League and Macmillan Nurses. They are Scott MacEwan, Graham Dunbar, Roy Middleton, Ryan MacKenzie, Kris Cameron, Steve Webster, Gordon Dickson, Scott Strachan, Euan Sharpe and Gareth Ruxton.

Annual meeting

The annual general meeting of Arbroath and District Pool League (ADPL) will be held on Thursday, August 23, in the Royal British Legion Scotland clubrooms, starting at 7.30 p.m. Office bearers and committee members for the new season will be voted in on the night.

Any player(s) who wishes to make a proposal must submit it in writing to Scott MacEwan, secretary, a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Players are reminded this is their opportunity to have a say on matters in the ADPL. All players are encouraged to attend.

Registration night

Arbroath and District Pool League team registration for the 2012/13 season will take place on Sunday, September 2, in the Royal British Legion Scotland clubrooms, starting at 7.30 p.m. Registration forms are available on the website and www.arbroath.scottishpool.com in the downloads section. Hard copies will be distributed around the venues in due course.

SPA Doubles

The national finals of this year’s SPA Scottish Doubles will be held at Craig Tara, Ayr, on Friday, November 9, starting at about 12 noon. Depending on entries there will be a local qualifier.

Players should note the national finals are being held the same weekend as the Super 15s ‘A’ Event and the weekend before the Super 15s ‘B’ Event at Pettycur Bay. Players competing in the national finals and who are not competing at the Super 15s ‘A’ event are not under any obligation to stay at Craig Tara.

Entries are to be submitted at the next SPA meeting on Sunday, September 2, therefore the Arbroath deadline for entries is Friday, August 31.
