Arbroath United v

Watsonians

United elected to bat at Lochlands on Saturday and made a promising start reaching 47 in the 10th over before Ross McLean was dimissed.

He was caught by Dewald Nel from the bowling of Paddy Sadler. Hamish Bartlett was dismissed by Nel in the following over but Brendan Ford and Fraser Burnett rebuilt the innings reaching 119 at the halfway stage.

The next 10 overs saw a change in United’s fortunes as they lost three wickets including Ford (65 from 99 balls, 8 fours) and Fraser Burnett (46 from 57 balls, 5 fours 1 six) to Brendan O’Connell and Alex Sim respectively.

Marc Petrie and Alvin Pollard added 30 before Petrie was caught by James Easton from Sim’s (2 for 31) bowling and Pollard went soon afterwards caught by Nel from Sadler’s (3 for 55) bowling who also dismissed Ben McGill as United closed on 213 for 9.

In reply Watsonians reached 30 in the eighth over when Stuart Chalmers was caught by McGill from Calvin Burnett’s bowling. Andrew Learmonth (43 from 48 balls, 7 fours) and Andrew Fraser-Harris took the total to 65 in the 15th over when McGill’s economical spell were rewarded with the dismissal of Learmonth.

Fraser-Harris (24 from 37 balls, 4 fours) and Ewan Chalmers 26 from 35 balls, 4 fours) added 44 before the former was bowled by Calvin Burnett and when Chalmers was trapped lbw by Craig Ramsay 91 runs was still required from 24 overs.

O’Connell and Hislop added a further 25 before Hislop was caught by Petrie from the bowling of Ramsay. O’Connell (61 from 59 balls, 7 fours) was joined by Jack Easton (unbeaten 22 from 38 balls) and they took Watsonians to the verge of victory only to see O’Connell trapped lbw by McLean with 10 runs still required. Watsonians went on to win by four wickets with 4.3 overs remaining. The fixture was sponsored by J M Henderson.

Stoneywood/Dyce v Abroath United

United were invited to bat at Peoples Park on Sunday on what proved to be a difficult batting wicket with variable bounce. They were in early difficulties as they came to terms with the pitch reaching 44 for 3 in the 16th over with David Kidd (2 for 26) claiming two of the wickets.

Darren Spink was joined by Calvin Burnett, who from the onset decided the best defence was to attack the bowling. Burnett brought up his half century from 27 balls. Spink continued to play the anchor role and the partnership had reached 128 when Burnett (92 from 46 balls, 11 fours, 5 sixes) was caught by Michael Leask from Elton Willemse’s bowling in the 32nd over.

Spink went on to complete his half century in 118 balls and reached 62 from 135 balls (8 fours, 2 sixes) before he was seventh out dismissed by a running Michael Hood catch from the bowling of Henk Comradie with the total on 208 in the 42nd over. Greig Peal hit 19 from 30 balls before being last out and Willemse’s (3 for 39) third victim as United closed on 238 in the 49th over.

When Stoneywood/Dyce batted Ben McGill dismissed both openers and Calvin Burnett had Michael Leask caught by Matthew Hurst in the 10th over to leave them on 41 for 3. McGill claimed a further two wickets finishing with 4 for 22 from 13 overs while Craig Ramsay trapped Mark Edwards lbw as they reached 67 for 6 from 21 overs.

Resistance came from Henk Comradie (44 from 46 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes) and Andrew Rayner as they added 49 before Rayner was dismissed by Alvin Pollard. Only a further six runs were added as Ramsay (4 for 46) claimed three wickets in six balls, Stoneywood/Dyce being dismissed for 122, United winning by 116 runs and can now look forward to a trip to Edinburgh to play Barclay’s Wealth Grange in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup
