ANGUS Darts Academy player Craig Johnston (14) from Arbroath is the New Fife Youth Open Champion.

This win takes Craig to joint second in the Scottish youth rankings with Jamie Roy (17), also from Arbroath and a member of the Angus Darts Academy.

The Arbroath teenager showed his mettle as he progressed through the strong youth field of 41 players in the CISWO Club, Glenrothes, at the weekend.

He played well all day beating some of the best youth players in the country. In the semi-final Craig beat Scottish youth international player Arry Edwards 3-1 to claim his place in the final.

It was held in front of 150 spectators from the Scottish darting community and the odds were against Craig as he was playing home favourite, Scottish youth international Brendyn Donnelly.

From the start Craig was on top and showed few nerves for his first appearance in a youth final. He went 2-0 up playing some great darts to get within touching distance of the title. Things got a bit tenser when Craig lost the next two legs and the match went to a deciding leg.

Craig’s opening three throws of the last leg were 100,100, 100 and this gave him breathing space to nail the winning double and be crowned champion for 2013.

The win also means that Craig has qualified for the Winmau World Youth Masters Championships in October and will join the elite field along with Angus Darts Academy team mate Jamie Roy.

In the girls’ event, Arbroath’s Rebecca Graham (11) was pipped to the title by Cody Hepburn from Renfrewshire after playing great darts. Rebecca is now ranked number one under-18 youth girl darts player in Scotland and she is only 11 years old.
