Arbroath’s Darren Burnett has produced a stunning performance to reach the final of the bowls singles at the Commonwealth Games.
The big bobby beat Australia’s Aron Sherriff 21-15 at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove green and will now be going for gold tomorrow (Friday, 5.45 p.m.) against Canadian Ryan Bester.
Burnett, the reigning world indoor champion, took control of the semi-final when both men were locked at 15-15, producing a succession of fantastic shots at crucial times. He edged ahead and there was no way back for Sherriff, who put up a brave fight.
Burnett said afterwards: “It was a great game against arguably one of the best players in the world. I knew it was going to be a really tough game and I’m quite glad his quarter-final was a long one with the Malaysian guy as well.
“We both went into it having two draining games and right up to about 13 or 15 shots there was nothing in the game, but I managed to find an extra gear and played a couple of good ends. I’m absolutely delighted.”
