Abbey Club

THE FINAL friendly of the season for Abbey Bowling Club seniors was away to Craigie Bowling Club where a most enjoyable day was had by all even though Abbey lost by eight shots.

The final of the men’s triples was won by John Falconer, Greg Dunsmore and Dave Wilson who beat Ron Harper, Sy Steele and Ian Croll 23-14.

The men’s competitions drew to a close with the Chapel being won by Malcolm Anderson two sets to one after an extra end against Ron Wilson.

In the semi-finals of the mixed triples, Ella Moss, Brian Johnston and Dave Wilson beat Dave Beattie, Alan French and Janette Tosh 17-15 and Frank Benham, Margaret Fraser and Bob Skea lost 9-8 to Les Barnett, Joyce Wilson and Jim Arthur who went on to win the final 11-10.

Carnoustie was the venue for the last fixture before closing day which is tomorrow (Saturday). This is undoubtedly one of the most popular venues of the season, with the green basking in sunshine and all the banter going around. It was hard to believe it was the end of another season but it was good to finish with a win as Abbey took the game by 46 shots.

Juniors

Abbey juniors held their closing day on Sunday and they too were blessed with good weather for their finals.

In the novice section, the two-ball pairs was won by Jordan Watt and Amy Beattie who beat Marjorie Bago and Jack Muir; the four-ball pairs went to Jordan Watt and

Abbie Beattie who defeated Marjorie Bago and Kimberly Nicholson. Jordan Watt made it three out three as he also won the singles beating Kimberly Nicholson.

The junior section two-ball pairs was won by Kyale Ross and Caitlin Waddilove who defeated Stuart Farmer and Keiran Ross. The four-ball pairs went to Josie Kennedy and Hazel Sime as they beat Caitlin Waddilove and Kyale Ross. The Junior Champion is Keiran Ross who beat his brother, Kyale.

Once the finals were completed and the youngsters had enjoyed a meal, the presentation of the trophies was done by Pamela Bennett, wife of Steve Bennett, proprietor of Robertson Butchers, sponsor of the juniors. Pamela received a bouquet from Mariz Bago.

Back on the green the juniors took on parents and adults and won easily. This was followed by the youngsters trying to hit various targets to win prizes.

Ladies’ section

Abbey Bowling Club ladies’ section prize-winners are as follows: Championship singles - Sheila Geddes; championship pairs - Lynn Whammond and Kathleen Gordon; championship triples - Ella Webster, Ely Marnie and Lynn Whammond; and championship fours - Lynn Whammond, Ann Burnett, Helen Calder and Margaret Fraser; Alice Laing Triples - Joyce Wilson, May Dundas and Janette Tosh; Handicap Singles - Emma Phillip; Mae Knox Singles - Lynn Whammond; GLF Singles - Lynn Whammond; and Nominated Pairs - Lynn whammond and Ely Marnie.

Arbroath Club

VICE-PRESIDENT Eric Scott welcomed 33 members for the closing game between the president and the vice-president’s teams on Saturday.

Good weather made it a most enjoyable afternoon.

President Joe McKelvie’s team rose to the occasion and won by 17 shots.

NEWGATE Bowling Club’s under-60s took on the over-60s on Saturday. Experience came good for the over-60s who recorded a convincing victory.

Seniors’ captain Tom Fraser was presented with the trophy by club president Charlie Cooper who had captained the under-60s. The game was sponsored by Angus Decorators.

Closing day

The final game of the gents’ season takes place tomorrow (Saturday). The annual club dance and presentation of prizes will be held in the clubrooms on Saturday, November 5. Tickets for members and guests are available at the bar.

Annual meeting

The gents’ annual general meeting will be held in the clubrooms on Wednesday, November 9, at 7 p.m. A good turnout of members is requested.

Ladies’ section

The ladies held their final fixture of the season on Sunday when prizes were also presented. Invited guests included ladies from the Abbey, Arbroath and Lochlands clubs.

The ladies’ section annual general meeting will be held in the clubrooms on Thursday, November 17, at 7 p.m. A large turnout of members is requested.
