Ben stretches unbeaten run

ARBROATH Amateur Boxing Club’s North District Youth Champion, Ben Gibson, travelled to Huntly on Friday to take part in a boxing dinner promoted by Insch ABC in the Stewart Halls.

His original opponent had called off and he was rematched against the promoting club’s Chris Fisher, over whom he had a distinct weight advantage.

Fisher started boxing behind a tight high guard, firing off fast jabs. Gibson was unfazed and countered with straight rights and crisp left hooks behind the high gloves of Fisher. Gibson’s more accurate and powerful counters brought a standing count against Fisher when a thumping body shot stopped his opponent in his tracks.

Round two began with Fisher bravely taking the fight to Gibson only to be met with solid counters as Gibson began to totally dominate the overmatched Insch boxer. A fast accurate and telling two-punch combination dropped the plucky Fisher to the floor. The referee had no hesitation in stopping the contest in favour of Ben Gibson, who stretches his unbeaten run to four.

Ben, along with the growing pool of champions in the club will be featured in the forthcoming dinner show to be held in the British Legion Rooms, Helen Street, on Friday, April 26.

Tickets will be available soon and in a slight change to normal, sponsors can make a block booking which will include guaranteed ring-side seats for their party. These are limited, so early booking is advised. Contact Doug Ford on 01241 879383; David Strachan on 01241 876194 or any committee member or boxer to secure a ticket.
