Men’s First Team

Arbroath Lawn Tennis Club’s first men’s team were on the road again this week against Wormit and Newport.

The Arbroath side were still looking for their first win and made one change from the previous week. Dave Wood was playing his first match of the season – partnered with Ronnie Edwards.

This turned out to be another tight match with Arbroath taking a one point advantage in to the final round. Graham Crabb and Kevin Small won their match in the final round leaving Alan Green and Liam Curry needing to win one of their two sets to secure victory. In a tense first set they lost out on a tie-break. In the second set, however, they took control to win 6-2 and secure the team’s first win of the season.

This was really a relegation battle with both teams on two points before the match began. However, the league is so tight that a win against Scone on Thursday would see Arbroath move in to one of the promotion places.

Results, Arbroath names first:

First round - A. Green/L. Curry beat I. Dow/D. Petrie 6-1, 6-4; R. Edwards/D. Wood lost to G. Hill/A. Thompson 6-4, 6-2; G. Crabb/K. Small beat A. Fairley/D. Richmond 6-3, 6-1.

Second round - G. Crabb/K. Small lost to Hill/Thompson 7-6, 6-1; A. Green/L. Curry beat Fairley/Richmond 6-0, 6-3; R. Edwards/D. Wood drew with Dow/Petrie 1-6, 7-5.

There were three changes from last week’s team with Olivia Curran, Jan Fairlie and Teresa Lapadula joining Jennifer Green, Ashley Gorman and Rhiann Livingston. Falkland is only a two court club so each couple only played four sets instead of the normal six.
