Arbroath Lawn Tennis Club schedule

Men’s First Team

The men’s first team were away to West End in Dundee last week. Both teams were looking for their first win of the season. Arbroath welcomed Alan Green back into the starting line up for the first time this season. Other pairings were Graham Crabb / Kevin Small and Ronnie Edwards/ Sam Keillor.

This was yet another really close match with Arbroath taking the early initiative by winning four of the six sets in the opening round …. losing the remaining two on tie-breaks. They could not sustain this however and West End fought back to level the match after the second round. Honours were also even in the final round meaning that both sides remain without a win and currently sit in the relegation places in Division Two.

Results, Arbroath names first:

First round - R. Edwards/S. Keillor beat G. Williams/S. McBroom 6-2, 6-2; G. Crabb/K. Small beat C. Jockelson/A. Mackintosh 6-0, 6-1; A. Green/L. Curry lost to M. Paladini/B. Leslie 7-6, 7-6.

Second round - G. Crabb/K. Small lost to Paladini/Leslie 6-3, 7-6; A. Green/L. Curry beat Williams/McBroom 6-0, 6-2; R. Edwards/S. Keillor lost to Jockelson/Mackintosh 6-2, 6-3.

Third round - A. Green/L. Curry drew with Jockelson/Mackintosh 4-6, 6-3; R. Edwards/S. Keillor lost to Paladini/Leslie 6-1, 6-1; G. Crabb/K. Small beat Williams/McBroom 6-1, 6-0.

Men’s Second Team

The men’s second team was, once again, at home in the four player league. They were also playing West End. This match saw 10-year-old Ben O’Mara playing in his first ever senior match alongside his father, Dave. The other pairing saw Colin Keillor paired with Scott Newell.

West End fielded a fairly experienced side and although the Arbroath guys put in a good shift they were unable to win a set. West End ran out winners by eight sets to 0.

Results, Arbroath names first:

First round - C. Keillor/S. Newell lost to I. Dow/Z. Wang 6-3, 6-4; D. O’Mara/B. O’Mara lost to J. Alexander/G. Alexander 6-0, 6-0.

Second round - Keillor/Newell lost to Alexander/Alexander 6-2, 6-1; O’Mara/O’Mara lost to Dow/Wang 6-2, 6-4.

Result: 2nd Arbroath 0, West End 4.

Ladies’ First Team

The ladies first were at home again this week, this time to Broughty Ferry. There were two changes from last week’s side with Yolande Smart and Carolyn McKay replacing Teresa Lapadula and Nina Ledlie.

The windy conditions made this quite a difficult evening but the Arbroath ladies mastered the conditions and were always in control of the match.

Jennifer Green and Ellen Watson only lost a handful of games all evening – as did Ashley Gorman and Rhiann Livingstone. Yolande Smart and Carolyn McKay also contributed half a point in what turned out to be a comprehensive win. This gives the ladies four points out of a possible six after three matches.

Results, Arbroath names first:

First round - J. Green/E. Watson beat L. McKie/E. Campbell 6-0, 6-0; R. Livingstone/A. Gorman beat D. Mitchell/J. Spend 6-1, 6-1; C. McKay/Y. Smart lost to F. Dunn/J. Harvey 6-3, 7-6.

Second round - Livingstone/Gorman beat Dunn/Harvey 6-3, 6-1; McKay/Smart lost to McKie/Campbell 6-4, 6-1; Green/Watson beat Mitchell/Spend 6-1, 6-2.

Third round - McKay/Smart beat Mitchell/Spend 6-4; Green/Watson beat Dunn/Harvey 6-2; Livingstone/Gorman beat McKie/Campbell 6-2.

Bad light stopped play.

Result: 1st Arbroath 5.5, Broughty Ferry 2.

Ladies’ Second Team

The second ladie’s team travelled to Broughty Ferry on Monday night to face the league leaders in Division Three, Games Club. Games Club have maximum points from their matches so far while the Arbroath ladies were still looking to record their first win.

This was always going to be a difficult match for Arbroath and so it proved. Jan Fairlie and Cara Pattullo were the only pairing who managed to win a set all night against a very strong Games Club side.
