A trio of Britain’s greatest sporting knights are leading the charge at this year’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Sporting heroes Sir Ian Botham, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Steve Redgrave are just some of the famous athletes taking part in this year’s competition which tees off on Thursday.

Cricket is the top cross-over sport this year as Sir Ian Botham, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis, Allan Lamb, Mark Nicholas, Andrew Strauss, Michael Vaughan and Shane Warne have played over 800 tests.

Flying the flag for others sports are Sir Bobby Charlton, Johan Cruyff and Ruud Gullit for football, Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave, rugby stars Sea Fitzpatrick and Rob Louw and former British tennis number one Tim Henman.

Henman said: “Unquestionably the best golfing week of my year. The three courses – Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and St Andrews are just amazing.

“The opportunity to play with the pro’s, when they are competing in one of the biggest tournaments on the European Tour is such a privilege.

“I missed it last year when I had to go to China for some Wimbledon meetings with the players. It was a huge disappointment to miss out, so I can’t wait to be there this year. It’s definitely a goal of mine to make the cut in the Team event – I’ve never played on Sunday.”

Big names from the entertainment world so far announced include actors Hugh Grant, Kyle MacLachlan, James Nesbitt, Luke Wilson and Andy Garcia, Michael Flatley from Riverdance, rock star Huey Lewis and Don Felder from The Eagles.

Entrance to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be free at all three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A ticket price of £20 (concessionary £15) will be charged for the final day’s play over the Old Course on Sunday, September 29. Entry for under 16s and students is free. Tickets are available through the ticket hotline on 0870 010 9021 or at the entrance gates.
