Academy set sights on title

Arbroath Academy 5, St Stephen’s 1

ARBROATH Academy Badminton Club played their penultimate match of their first Dundee Area Badminton League season.

They knew that a win in Broughty Ferry against St Stephen’s would put them within a hair’s breadth of the league title.

The ladies’ doubles saw a fast start for Hardie and Smith as they demolished Clark and Duthie 21-8, before being tested in the second set and ultimately getting the win.

The second ladies’ doubles was a close affair with Smith this time partnered by Cameron and they took the first set before losing the second. The first gent’s doubles saw a slow start for Cargill and Chan as they were surprised in the first set before sweeping Brown and Donald aside in the second set 21-11 to force the draw. In the second gent’s double Chan and Mulford struggled to get into sync in the first set but still won it before stepping up their game in the second set to get the win. After the level doubles the Academy held a 2-0 lead.

Hardie and Cargill led off the mixed matches and faced the veteran pairing of Donald and Duthie. The St Stephen’s pairing attempted some gamesmanship but the Academy duo beat them quickly 21-10, 21-5.

Fiona Cameron and Lachlan Mulford were made to work in the first set against A. and S. Milne before taking it 21-17 and then took the second set to clinch the win for the Academy.

In the last round of games Jayne Smith and Tze Bon Chan lost a close a first set before rebounding to take the second set and gain a draw. Hardie and Cargill lost a close but poor match before Cameron and Mulford easily defeated Donald and Duthie to complete the fixture.
