A Graham Bayne strike was enough for Arbroath to record an impressive 1-0 win over SPL new boys Partick Thistle at Gayfield in a pre-season warm-up yesterday (Saturday).
Bayne’s goal on 58 minutes separated the two sides with the Lichties finding it a useful workout.
And at full-time manager Paul Sheerin was full of praise for the way the goal came about from an Alan Cook cross.
He said: “It was an unbelievable delivery from Cook and Bayne showed he is as hungry as ever.
“It was a great finish too.
“I’m pleased as it was a tough workout from a fitness point of view as we had a lot of chasing to do.
“But everything is building up so we can hit the ground running next week.”
And there was also more good news at full-time when the boss confirmed that Lari Yao had signed on as well as one of last season’s stand out performers Colin Hamilton.
It was an uneventful first half as the visitors had some half chances but lacked a killer instinct up front.
This meant the Arbroath defence was busy but managed to deal with everything that was thrown at them.
After the interval things looked more positive for the Lichties with Yao making some great runs down the right hand side.
But on 58 minutes the deadlock was broken when a deep cross from Cook on the left fell to BAYNE who struck the ball home from 10 yards. The goal proved to be the Gayfield men’s only real opportunity as Thistle tried to find an equaliser.
And they came close on 89 minutes when Declan McDaid unleashed a shot but his effort bounced off the crossbar.
But with time running out, Arbroath recorded what will be a confidence boosting pre-season victory against SPL opposition.
