ARBROATH Vics began their preparations for the new season with training having restarted in the last week of June.
Manager Jake Ferrier and his assistant, Arthur Walker, have been pleased with the turnout at the sessions as the players returned in preparation for the kick-off on August 6.
There are five new faces at Ogilvy Park at present, four on the playing side and one on the coaching staff.
Former player Derek Lawson has joined the coaching side. Derek played for Vics for several seasons before taking up a similar role at Brechin Vics and then becoming manager there in his own right. He then moved on to Australia taking up a coaching position down under before returning to Scotland as a coach for a brief spell at ASC towards the end of last season.
On the playing side, Nicky Smith has joined from Montrose. Nicky held a regular spot for Montrose in the Scottish Third Division last season and had a previous spell at Vics as a loan signing from Forfar Athletic the season before last.
The second of Vics’ signings is experienced striker Chris Simpson from Dundee Violet. Chris has also worn the colours of Montrose Roselea, Forfar West End and Brechin Vics where he had a spell as player/manager.
Midfielder Mark Fotheringham has returned to the club after two seasons at Montrose Roselea in a swap deal, which sees Craig Anderson moving in the opposite direction.
The fourth of Vics’ signings is Terry Gray who was at ASC for several seasons before they decided to call it a day at the end of last season.
There are others whom the management team has extended training facilities to and there may be further signings to follow.
One player who has left Ogilvy Park is Stuart Richardson who has been transferred to Super League side Lochee United. Stuart wanted to try his luck at a higher level and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club.
Vics have arranged five friendlies, all at Ogilvy Park before the real action begins. The first is at home to Aberdeen based Lewis United who play in the North Region Super League on Saturday, July 16. They then follow that up with a midweek match against Tayport, on Tuesday, July 19, who are now managed by ex-Arbroath manager, John McGlashan. Other friendlies are against Letham Lads’, Saturday, July 23, Arbroath FC Youths, Tuesday, July 26, and Invergowrie Amateurs, Saturday, July 30.
All Saturday friendlies kick-off at 2.30 p.m., while those in midweek get under way at 7 p.m.
In the D.J. Laing League Cup, Vics have been drawn in Group B, along with Blairgowrie, Forfar Albion and Montrose Roselea.
Their first fixture in the competition is at home to Forfar Albion on Saturday, August 6, before heading to Montrose to face Roselea on the 13th. They complete their league League Cup section with a home match against Blairgowrie on August 20.

The following week, Saturday, September 3, Vics are at home to Kirrie Thistle, before another away match at Dundee North End on Saturday, September 10.
The North Division has a new sponsor this season, online betting firm McBookie. The firm has agreed to back not only the North Divison, but the Central and South Leagues also.
The last of the fixtures to be issued by the East Region J.F.A sees Vics back at home in an East of Scotland 1st round cup-tie against East Craigie on Saturday, September 17.
Vics are again pleased to announce they have secured backing from The Fisherman’s Inn, who will again be their major sponsor for another season.
