Arbroath Vics continued their league programme with a home fixture against league leaders Downfield at Ogilvy Park on Saturday.

The league leaders showed their intent from the off when Kevin Milne flicked a Kieran Small pass into the path of Terry Connell where the ball broke off his shins straight to Liam McCartney, who fired in a shot, which Alex Cargill did well to beat away.

Alex Cargill was again called into action in the seventh minute when he dived low to his left to turn a Kevin Milne shot round the post after Gary Archibald had created the opening.

Although Vics looked neat and tidy in the middle of the park, they were finding it difficult to break down the Downfield defence and the Dundee side took the lead in the 18th minute.

Marc O’Leary sent the ball through the defence for Ryan Ridgden to run on to and the number 11 got to it before Alex Cargill to steer a shot into the net.

When Vics did get forward they again found the Downfield defence in an uncompromising mood; Andy Ballantine sweeping away a Josh Chalmers cross intended for Scott Donald.

Despite that, Vics had a gilt edged chance to get back on level terms in the 25th minute.

Garry Warren swung a free-kick into the box, which the Downfield defence failed to deal with, and when the ball was played back into the middle from the by-line, Scott Donald got on the end of it, but fired his shot over the bar from seven yards.

Vics were gradually pushing Downfield back and they got a deserved equaliser in the 42nd minute.

Garry Warren played the ball down the left to Scott Donald, and when he clipped the ball over the central defenders head from the by-line, Rikki Gillespie finished off the move by sending a first-time shot into the net beyond the stranded keeper.

It took just around 30 seconds of the second half for Downfield to call Alex Cargill into action; Liam McCartney sending in a low shot, which the keeper did well to get down to low to his left-hand post to push away to safety.

Downfield regained the lead in the 58th minute.

A flowing move ended with Ryan Rigden playing the ball into the box for Liam McCartney and he wasted little time in sending it low beyond Alex Cargill.

Vics had a great chance to get back on level terms when Abdourahman Njie sent a lovely crossfield pass into the path of Scott Donald, which breached the Downfield defence, but having got into the box, the striker’s shot crashed into the legs of Jamie Kelly and away from goal.

The miss proved costly as a couple of minutes later, Downfield moved 3-1 ahead, Kevin Milne finishing off a move by sweeping the ball home from around 15 yards.
