Arbroath Vics took a break from the rigours of trying to gather league points when they entertained Fife side Lochgelly Albert from the South Division in the first round of the East of Scotland Cup at Ogilvy Park on Saturday.

The first chance fell Vics’ way in the third minute when Corey McCulloch swung a cross into the box from the left, which saw Ryan Owbridge get in between a couple of defenders to reach the ball with his head, but it had little purchase on it and dropped comfortably into the arms of Albert goalkeeper, Lee Wilson.

Albert replied with Lewis Grierson sending a pass down the right for Darren Seath to race onto, but his angled drive bounced across the face of goal and wide of the far post without troubling Alex Cargill.

Vics had a decent chance of taking the lead a couple of minutes later when Corey McCulloch played the ball forward to Abdourahman Njie who cut inside and set up Josh Chalmers, but after taking a touch, he drilled his shot over the bar from 16 yards.

Alex Cargill kept Vics on level terms in the 26th minute when Lewis Grierson sent Michael Lawson away down the right and the keeper spread himself to block away his netbound shot for a corner.

Gary Pearson was yellow carded for dissent in the 32nd minute, before Lochgelly took the lead a minute later.

Darren Seath lined up a free-kick just outside the box and his low shot found the net underneath the body of Cargill close to the post.

In the 55th minute a Kevin Durno clearance from a Lewis Grierson throw fell into the path of Kieran Dowie who’s first time shot wasn’t far off target.

Vics pushed forward forcing three corners in quick succession and from the third of these got back on level terms. Keeper Lee Wilson fumbled Josh Chalmers cross as it swung under the bar and it was eventually forced over the line with Abdourahman Njie claiming the final touch.

From a corner kick, Steven Page’s low cross was missed by everyone in a black and white jersey and Scott Gibson pounced to blast the ball into the back of the net from eight yards.

Despite throwing Cargill forward, Vics were unable to grab an equaliser.

Vics are back on league duty this Saturday when Dundee North End are the visitors to Ogilvy Park at 2.30pm.
