WITH conditions near perfect and a crowd of around 100, Lads’ Club under-13s were able to name a full squad of 16 for the first time in eight weeks. This was a luxury that was to prove pivotal as their game against Edinburgh side Hunterfield in the Scottish Cup progressed.
In a tentative first half both sides found underfoot conditions difficult with play being mainly confined to the centre of the park and neither side able to find their rhythm.
The most notable action of the half came from Mowatt who, in 22 minutes, found himself surging through the Hunterfield defence but his shot went wide.
An early substitution saw Lightfoot replace Murphy. Soon after, a free kick flighted in from the left by Clark left the Yellows’ defence claiming for offside. With no whistle, it was left to Lightfoot to knock in from only a few yards to put the Lads’ Club 1-0 up.
The home side now had the bit between their teeth and were constantly on the attack looking for a second. They didn’t have too long to wait. On 45 minutes some fine midfield play from Waddell released Land who drove through the middle and played a precision pass out to the left to Paterson. He saw his left-foot drive from just outside the box rifle into the roof of the net giving the ‘keeper no chance.
In 48 minutes another surging run by Lightfoot found him one on one with the ‘keeper and he duly dispatched the ball past the diving ‘keeper to put the home side three goals to the good.
At this point the home side was beginning to tire but somehow were able to muster up the energy to round off the tie with a fine hat-trick from Lightfoot on 57 minutes.
Bastow and Yule replaced Mowatt and Sime, respectively, in like for like swaps, but this made no difference to the team as they continued to battle to the end. With over 10 minutes still remaining, Swankie and Gauld replaced the excellent Clark and Paterson. Lads’ Club now go onto play Huntly Boys from the Aberdeenshire leagues in the fifth round, again at home, this weekend. After the game food and some light refreshments were enjoyed at the neighbouring cricket club.
The coaches of the Lads’ Club under-13s have extended their thanks to Arbroath United Cricket Club for their hospitality and use of facilities, to all parents for the catering and all support on the day.
