In-form Lichties eyeing winning end to first quarter at home to Annan

Slowly but surely Arbroath are climbing their way up the table after recovering from a poor start to the League Two season.cccc

Saturday’s 4-0 hammering of East Stirling moved the Lichties to eighth in the league, and a win this weekend at home to Annan Athletic could lift Todd Lumsden’s side as high as fourth in the table - if results go their way.

Todd said it was a good display on Saturday as his players ground down a well-organised Shire side who never made it easy for the visitors.

He said: “It was a good performance. We scored some good goals and played some very good stuff.

“The red card didn’t change the game but I still thought they moved the ball around well when they went down to 10 men, which is credit to them.

“We scored three goals when they were down to 10 men, obviously one from the penalty and then two more, so we’re pleased in that respect because it shows our quality.

“But it wasn’t easy, it wasn’t an easy 4-0 although 4-0 is a good scoreline. We created a lot of chances but they still moved the ball about very well. There are no easy games in this league.

“A major factor for us in the game was that we went ahead so early on. But at 1-0 up all it takes is a momentary lapse in concentration at a set piece or anything to let them back into the game at 1-1. But we held on and grabbed another clean sheet in the process.

“The league can change that quickly, we’ve gone from last to eighth after three wins. Now we’re thinking we can aim a bit higher and we’re only five points from the top I think it is, we want to keep winning our games to keep in touch with them. So now we look to Annan on Saturday.

“The players have trained excellently for the last six weeks or so, they’ve played very well, now we’re getting the rewards for the performances they’ve put in.

“All we can ask them is to keep putting the workrate and effort in that they have been.

“It would be great to finish the quarter with another win. But again we’re not going to chase things, we’re going to take things a game or half a game at a time.

“Early in the season the players were anxious about needing to win a game, we don’t need to win a game just go out there and play.

“The rest will come. That’s what we’ve done the last three weeks and look what we’ve got.”
