ARBROATH chairman John Christison heaped praise on the army of ground staff whose monumental effort managed to get the pitch ready for Wednesday night’s clash.
Around 20 volunteers worked from early morning, with the game at one point looking in doubt.
The team first had to clear a layer of frost that had formed on the Gayfield covers before then removing them.
They then had to work on the pitch constantly until kick-off to ensure the game could definitely go ahead as any postponement would have meant disaster for the club.
But Mr Christison couldn’t praise the ground staff enough.
He said: “They were all here from eight o’clock in the morning and then right throughout until kick-off. We have to thank Steve at Robertsons who provided them all with free pies to keep them going. They did a fantastic job and I can’t thank the volunteers enough.”
