Arbroath 2, Celtic 5
Arbroath bowed out of the Under-19 League Cup on Saturday at Gayfield to a young full-time Celtic team who also broke the young Lichties’ 19-game unbeaten streak.
Pat Martin, who is only 16, opened the scoring in the first minute of the game before Comrie headed in from the corner in the 27th minute.
Donnelly put Celtic in the lead in the 37th minute with a really beautiful goal but Arbroath who had a great first half scored a deserved equaliser in the 44th minute when Dayle Robertson fired in.
Arbroath kicked off the second half and won a series of corners but just couldn’t find the 3rd goal instead it was Celtic who scored next with Lafferty firing past Wilson. Arbroath continued to dominate and McWalter almost levelled the game with a 30 yard lob yet their ‘keeper pulled off a world class save, yet it was Celtic who broke again on the counter attack and Donnelly caught Wilson off his line with a 40 yard lob.
In the 75th minute Arbroath were denied a clear penalty kick with a blatant handball yet the referee much to the crowd’s amazement awarded a corner kick instead.
As Arbroath went for a goal Celtic managed to again break on the counter attack and Murray got their fifth in the 83rd minute.
It was a cruel result for the young Lichties because the scoreline didn’t reflect the game and there were plenty of positives for the team, the supporters and Paul Sheerin and Stewart Petrie who were watching on.
Sadly this was Dayle Robertson’s final game before he heads off to America but I am sure it is not the last we will hear of him as he looks to have a bright future ahead of him.
Congratulations again to Neil Thomson’s team and hopefully we will see more of these young Lichties in the first team next season.
It is unfair to really call for a man of the match but both Martin and Robertson up front played really well and Scott Adams looks really exciting but I thought Kieran McWalter was fantastic. Very similar in style to ‘Falky’ [Josh Falingham] and covered every blade of grass.
Sad that the other youth teams have been cut as this group have been together for three or four years and it really shows in the way they can pass the ball to one another.
