FPs hit five in opener

Arbroath High School FPs A 5,

Monifieth Tayside A 0

THE FPS kicked off the new season at Victoria Park with a home tie in the Lunan Trophy looking to build on their fine end to last season when they won the Wallace Cup.

They got off the perfect start with an early goal when Lees got in front of the ‘keeper and chested the ball into the path of PAUL TIERNEY who fired home with ease.

The home team continued to press and made numerous chances which were all passed up with the strikers mainly to blame. A quick throw from Wilson put KIERRON LYONS in on goal to lob the ‘keeper and give the FPs the second goal their play merited.

Half-time: High School FP A 2, Monifieth Tayside A 0.

The home team again got an early goal when a Lyons’ corner was headed into an empty net by GREG MORRISON who got the ball just before the ‘keeper who had come well off his line to try and catch the ball.

FPs soon made it four when a good run by Talbert ended with a square ball to SEAN LEES who took a touch before firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Petrie, Soutar and Mackenzie then replaced Tierney, Morrison and Macgregor. The FPs contnued to play good passing football and got a fifth goal when a long ball from Kyle Lyons played Cargill through on goal and he rounded the ‘keeper before cutting the ball back to allow MARC SOUTAR, who was returning from a terrible knee injury, to score his first goal on his debut much to his and the entire team’s delight.

The man-of-the-match award went to Adam Talbert whose all action display was only missing some composure in front of goal. The match ball was sponsored by the Portcullis Bar.

Team: Saunderson, MacGregor, Morrison, Kyle Lyons, Wilson, Lees, Reid, Kierron Lyons, Talbert, Tierney, Cargill. Substitutes: Soutar, Petrie, Mackenzie, Smith and Hay.

The FPs’ Midlands squad had a fine 5-0 victory over Morgan Academy in the Tay Valley shield at Friockheim Park on Saturday.

A fine team performance was capped by the outstanding MOWATT who scored four goals, with converted forward RIDDELL neeting the FPs’ other counter in a strong home performance.
