Cove Rangers 1, Arbroath 0
ARBROATH FC played their first friendly match as they build for the new season on Saturday, a friendly against Highland League outfit Cove Rangers at a rainswept Allan Park.
Manager Paul Sheerin fielded a battery of trialists with a nucleus of trusted regulars.
The home side looked the sharper of the two outfits for much of the first half, although scoring opportunities were few and far between.
Cove’s best effort came in 16 minutes when an attempted clearance rebounded into the path of Danny Milne but Darren Hill bravely dived at the striker’s feet to smother the danger.
At the other end, Steven Doris had a chance after good build-up work by Daniel Rennie, but his effort was deflected behind for a flag kick.
Half-time: Cove Rangers 0, Arbroath 0.
Arbroath made three changes after the break with new signings Derek Holmes and Paul Currie coming on with Lee Sibanda.
The alterations had an immediate impact as the Lichties increased the tempo and created several openings.
Trialist Zane Powell came close on two occasions then Doris forced a fine save from Cove substitute goalkeeper Greg Sim.
However, just when it appeared that the Maroons might be taking control, Dean Lawrie raced away upfield before crossing for RYAN STOTT who fired low past the Arbroath ‘keeper. The visitors should have equalised three minutes from the end when Jake Mair was fouled in the penalty box but Currie fired the spot kick kick high over the bar.
